Dr. Frederick Travis received his PhD in Psychology at Maharishi International University in 1988, where he now serves as director of the Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition. His work has focused on brain development from birth to adulthood, the effects of meditation on the brain, markers of higher states of consciousness, peak performance and effects of ancient Indian Vedic practices such as yoga postures and sacred literature. Fred has published over 90 papers and book chapters and has authored or co-authored four books. He lectures globally on brain and consciousness.

Here he and Dawson share enthusiastically about the scientific insights that most inspire them, including:

  • We’re now using the “hard sciences” to validate “soft” practices like meditation
  • How we can measure subjective experiences using objective changes in the body
  • Subjective and objective are different sides of the same coin
  • How does something as complex as consciousness spring from the hardware of brain?
  • Ways the patterns in consciousness are reflected in the physical world
  • In research, combining standardized tests, interviews, and EEG
  • People with high levels of brain coherence are happier and transcendent
  • The problem of suffering
  • Even though suffering comes from the inside; it’s still very real
  • Sleep, yoga, meditation, are all forms of stress reduction
  • Stress doesn’t exist out in the world; it’s our perception of the situation
  • What is your genius, expressed as you connect to nonlocal reality?
