#77: Liz and Bryce are back this week with a solo episode to discuss what happens when things get hard. From stubbing your toe to experiencing a close personal loss, and everything in between, those tough experiences and emotions don't disappear in sobriety. It takes time to learn how to break the habits and get through those feelings. For Bryce, time is one of the most important factors when it comes to dealing with hard things. Time allows for us to sit in the confusion and sadness, and reach back to previous experiences for tools to persevere. But for folks who don't have the luxury of time and hindsight, just as Liz and Bryce didn't in early recovery, it's important to surround yourself with the folks who have already cultivated the tools. Tune into the episode to hear more on this topic, including:
- The importance of mindset to Liz's journey, and the myth that once you put the substance down everything suddenly becomes better.
- How for Bryce, learning emotional regulation and how to reframe situations into something productive was, and still is, a huge part of his recovery journey.
- How sometimes the perfect storm of situations and emotions arise, and that's when the tools, routines, and resources are so important.
- How sometimes the small things can feel like climbing a mountain, but it's important to take a moment to reflect and "choose your hard."
- Bryce's motto: Wake up tomorrow and stand on the shoulders of the work you did today.
- Remembering to have compassion for yourself amidst the process: you are not the only one going through this.
