Instead, we often excuse and attempt to justify ourselves, saying things like, "I can’t help it. It’s my temperament," or "My parents are the same way," or, "I am what I am." And, then, we go on spending our time in search of wealth or happiness, discharging more or less faithfully the duties of daily life, while spending little effort each day on eradicating our weaknesses and bettering ourselves.
