Why Swim in the Deep End When You Can Wade In the Kiddie Pool
Manage episode 418257352 series 3574193
Executive Presence (EP) is a fairly recent term that outlines the perceived qualities of what a senior manager or C-Suite executive must have. Up-and-coming leaders have long been told that to be considered for these roles, they must demonstrate “Executive Presence” (EP). These attributes include gravitas, communication, and appearance traits. In 2012 these attributes included a blue-chip pedigree, the ability to command a room, and a slick, polished, tall look with lots of youthful vim and vigor.
However, over the past decade as a result of the pandemic, political and economic instability, social movements, and changing workplace technologies, what people expect from leaders has changed. But what are some of the new EP requirements (read the article in HBR here)? Although some of the required attributes have stayed relatively the same, and some have been improved, many of the new requirements feel, well, a bit watered down. So the question arises, has EP improved over the last decade? Or perhaps, are we allowing leaders to hang out in the kiddie pool? Global statistics on leadership indicate the latter (check out the hottest item in business today for those statistics).
Rich and Maikel dive into the deep end of EP on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.
