Join us this week as we sit down with Sensei Wilfreed Seerattan. Sensei Seerattan is a 6th degree black belt and is the head instructor of the Toronto Japan Karate Association (JKA) Dojo. He was born in Trinidad in 1966, began practicing karate in September of 1983 with Sensei Archeson Wells, and obtained his Shodan in 1989 from Okazaki Sensei. He moved to Canada in the same year, and by 1990 was training and teaching with Sensei Gary Hails (see our PKCC Episode 95 with Gary Hails) at his club “Toronto Shotokan Karate Dojo.” Six years later, Sensei Seerattan became the head instructor of Toronto Shotokan Karate Dojo. It wouldn’t be until January 1st, 2010, when the dojo would be moved and renamed to “Toronto JKA Karate”. Throughout his years training, Sensei Seerattan has competed with team Canada all over the world, in places such as Japan, for the World Shotocup, Peru, and Columbia, for the Pan-American Karate Championships, where Sensei Seerattan has placed silver for kata and bronze for kumite. On top of competing himself, Sensei Seerattan has also studied and obtained some Technical Qualifications for judging, such as ‘B’ kyu judge, ‘C’ kyu Examiner and ‘C’ kyu instructor.
