A Clare Fianna Fáil candidate has admitted the Government needs to cut the red tape in order for small businesses to survive. It follows industry criticism over the €4,000 power up grant introduced in the Budget, which only applied to firms who received the Increased Cost of Business payment , distributed in October. So far this year, over 760 retail firms and restaurants have closed nationwide, and in its manifesto, Fianna Fáil has pledged to develop a new cost of business advisory forum to oversee new supports for the sector. A new survey suggests Clare people are broadly in favour of tax breaks for developers in order to boost rental housing supply. Myhome.ie's report which has just been published consulted over 1,800 people nationwide and found that 88% believe there hasn't been enough action on vacant housing, while 46% want Rent Pressure Zones to be abolished. The Ennis and Shannon Electoral Areas are both Rent Pressure Zones, meaning a tenant's bill cannot be increased by more than 2% in a year. Managing Director of MyHome.ie Joanne Geary says the Government needs to take the public mood into account.…

It's claimed Clare's not getting bang for its buck on active travel projects due to a "frustrating" overspend on consultants. New figures obtained by Clare FM show the council has spent €2.4M on outside expertise to help design for greenways, pedestrian crossings and cycle lanes in the past five years, with over €1m alone going to the West Clare Greenway. This is despite €550,000 been allocated in government grants to Clare County Council's internal active travel office in the last two years. Inagh-based Deputy Leader of the Green Party Roisín Garvey has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan she believes the process could be much more efficient.…

The Government has given the green light to a plan to develop a State-led liquified natural gas terminal. The plan was brought before a meeting of the Cabinet by Minister for Transport, Environment, Climate and Energy, Darragh O'Brien on Wednesday. Minister for Transport, Environment, Climate and Energy, Darragh O'Brien brought the plan before a meeting of the Cabinet this morning. The floating facility, which would be located at a coastal location, would serve Ireland’s emergency gas reserve. The news is being welcomed by Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Healy Rae, who feels the decision has opened the door to progress the long-term Shannon Estuary project. However, liquified natural gas is a controversial form of gas, and many have expressed environmental and ecological concerns and concerns over an LNG terminal being located at the Shannon Estuary, were it to be located there. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, TD Michael Healy Rae, and lecturer at University of Galway, Dr Sinéad Sheehan.
