Mary Fields was born into slavery around 1832…maybe in Tennessee. That is how all accounts of her begin because well, we don’t know much else about her early years. However, we do know that Mary goes on to impact many lives not only as a caretaker, but as a savvy business women and compassionate citizen. This Complicated Woman of History provides a perfect example of perseverance and friendship.
