In this episode, Eric has Anthony Quintero in the studio to discuss the Koi Herpesvirus Disease (KHVD). Anthony works hand in hand with university research teams and runs a greenhouse quarantine space for Koi to study KHVD and other prominent diseases. People do not talk about this epidemic enough, maybe because they just don’t want to. KHVD originated in Japan and recent outbreaks in California have many people concerned. Koi are a massive food source, so even if you do not have a pond in your backyard, it could still affect you or someone you know. You are going to be exposed to alot of information about this disease as well as how to protect your fish!

Eric shares his insight on:

  • Recent California outbreak of KHVD
  • Where KHVD is reported and what are the consequences
  • Difference between a healthy fish and unhealthy fish
  • Anthony’s biosecure greenhouse quarantine space
  • Purchasing Koi from Japan as a dealer, risks and rewards
  • The process from entrance to exit in Anthony’s greenhouse quarantine protocols
  • The most common questions that people have in regards to KHVD
  • Deciding how many fish to test and what tests to run
  • Actually testing the fish and what that entails
  • Benefits of performing different styles of testing
  • Types of KHVD and the different animals that carry
  • The difference between a Koi dealer and a Koi retailer
  • What every pond maintenance company should be doing in wake of the outbreaks
  • Anthony’s equipment sterilization process
  • Proper etiquette when around Koi tanks and shows
  • Responsibilities toward discharge water
  • Worries that come with water plants
