For many travelers, Antarctica is a bucket-list destination, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to touch all seven continents. In 2023, a record-breaking 100,000 tourists made the trip. But the journey begs a fundamental question: What do we risk by traveling to a place that is supposed to be uninhabited by humans? And as the climate warms, should we really be going to Antarctica in the first place? In this episode of StartUp Health NOW , we dive into one of the most fascinating innovation stories in health tech. Our guest is Chuck Papageorgiou , CEO of NeuroEM Therapeutics , a company that’s part of StartUp Health’s Alzheimer’s Moonshot Community and is making waves with a radically different approach to treating Alzheimer’s disease — using radio waves. What started as a research study to prove that cell phones cause brain cancer led to an unexpected breakthrough: the very same radio frequencies used in phones appeared to improve brain health in mice with Alzheimer’s. The discovery sparked a scientific journey that has since included promising human trials, FDA Breakthrough Device designation, partnerships, and progress towards bringing this non-invasive, affordable, at-home therapy to millions. Papageorgiou shares how NeuroEM’s wearable headset is helping untangle the brain’s toxic proteins, the science behind this counterintuitive tech, and why the impact could rival — or even surpass — that of current Alzheimer’s drugs. If you’re looking for an inspiring story about accidental genius ideas, bold leadership, and breakthrough innovation in brain health, this one’s a must-listen. Are you ready to tell YOUR story? Are health tech founders building what the market actually needs? At StartUp Health, we see firsthand their biggest challenge: achieving product-market fit. But it’s more than just market alignment. Investor Robert Garber of 7wireVentures calls it “contract-market fit”—proof that people will pay . This week, we talk with Robin Roberts, CEO & Founder of DatosX , a company in the StartUp Health community that is helping digital health startups achieve just that. The Problem: Many early-stage health companies struggle with product-market fit. They may be building amazing technology, but the market isn’t ready. The Solution: DatosX is a two-sided marketplace connecting health tech buyers (like hospitals) with startups. This enables: Pre-validation of purchases by hospitals. Creation of buyable products by startups. The Insight: This unique position gives Roberts a front-row seat to what hospitals really want (hint: it involves physician efficiency) and where startups often miss the mark. The Opportunity: We explore these critical trends and discover the opportunities for savvy startups in 2025. Listen in as Roberts shares his insights on achieving product-market fit and contract-market fit in the digital health space. This idea called “ food as medicine ” isn’t new. People have been talking for decades about how the foods we put in our body play a bigger role in preventative health and disease management than any drug or medication we could. But it’s always been on the fringe. Partly because it’s difficult to do the studies that clinically prove that foods can be as effective as medications. And second, which is related, there hasn’t been much funding for this kind of work. So, what’s changed? To answer that question, we sat down with Victor Penev, CEO & Founder of Edamam , a longtime member of the StartUp Health Community. Victor’s created what may be the world’s largest repository of food data. But he’s also a futurist with a keen eye on where the industry is heading. In our conversation Penev explains how the uptake in GLP-1s and generative AI have come together in a fascinating way that opens up new opportunities in nutrition. Importantly, it may open up new funding sources and innovative business models. On that note: StartUp Health has formally kicked off our Food as Medicine Health Moonshot Community , so if you or someone you know is a founder working in nutrition, someone with a passion to use food to make the world a healthier place, we’re accepting applications at StartUpHealth.com . Alzheimer's disease has long been a formidable challenge, but recent scientific breakthroughs offer a glimmer of hope. The FINGER study, a landmark in Alzheimer's research, demonstrated the power of simple lifestyle changes in preventing cognitive decline. However, translating these findings into practical, everyday strategies has proven elusive. In this episode of StartUp Health NOW, we explore how Mindr, a pioneering startup in our Alzheimer’s Moonshot Community, is bridging the gap between research – the FINGER study – and real-world application in the lives of people at risk for Alzheimer’s and dementia. By leveraging the best of modern consumer tech – like a well designed app on your phone – Mindr aims to make internationally-recognized advances in healthcare accessible to everyone. This is a story that applies in almost every area of health. We have the information, but we struggle to get it out of the lab, out of the peer reviewed journal, and into everyday life. Mindr's co-founders Adam Schultz and Ariana Myers explain how they’re attempting to bridge this divide and what it will take to succeed on a bigger scale. "Academia is a great area and fosters innovation, but then taking that science and translating it into something that can actually impact human health has a number of challenges. So trying to understand what those barriers are and how we can help bridge them is something that we have been able to do at ADDF and in collaboration with StartUp Health." In this episode of StartUp Health NOW, we chat with Laura Nisenbaum, PhD, Executive Director of Drug Development at the Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF). Organizations like ADDF are working to translate scientific research into real patient impact, particularly in the field of Alzheimer's disease, by funding innovative ventures and supporting startups in the biotech space. Dr. Nisenbaum talks with us about new Alzheimer’s tests and therapeutics and pulls back the curtain on how ADDF supports startups. Key Insights: We are at a tipping point in Alzheimer’s. Our ability to predict and detect – and then treat – Alzheimer’s disease is growing faster than ever. Dr. Laura Nisenbaum was involved in the launch of StartUp Health's Alzheimer's Moonshot, a collaboration with The Gates Foundation and ADDF, which is important for advancing research in the field of Alzheimer's disease. Academia fosters innovation, but translating scientific work into real patient impact poses challenges that need to be understood and bridged. Venture philanthropy model enables funding for innovators who may not receive funding from for-profit companies, allowing for more risky endeavors. The Diagnostics Accelerator challenges the research community to develop cutting-edge biomarkers and explore novel diagnostic technologies that will aid in Alzheimer’s diagnosis and clinical trial design. The potential for AI to revolutionize Alzheimer's research and diagnosis is evident in the funding and support for innovative companies in the field. Focusing on the biology of aging, including inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction, could be key in developing novel therapies for Alzheimer's disease. The field of Alzheimer's research and care is at an amazing point with the first demonstration of some efficacy for drugs and a huge innovation curve from a biomarkers and diagnostics perspective. We can now detect amyloid in the brain through blood tests, marking an amazing point of innovation in the field of Alzheimer's research. Pursue innovative ideas with great gusto and perseverance, and take advantage of the incredible network of mentors and collaborators to thrive in the biotech and startup space. The momentum is building in the field of Alzheimer's research, thanks to the support from organizations like ADDF. Innovating in Alzheimer’s disease? Learn how you can join our Alzheimer’s Moonshot.
