Where the Myeloma Reside? Part I
Manage episode 286309417 series 2816013
March is Multiple Meyeloma Awareness Month. In this episode, The Docs go over the signs and symptoms of multiple myeloma, how it is diagnosed, and some ways to help lower your risk.
Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Healthy plasma cells help you fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs. In multiple myeloma, cancerous plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow and crowd out healthy blood cells. Rather than produce helpful antibodies, the cancer cells produce abnormal proteins that can cause complications.
Multiple Myeloma is usually diagnosed in patients in their 60s, but Black patients are often diagnosed a decade earlier. Black patients are also twice as likely to develop multiple myeloma as patients of other races.
MGUS (monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance): A precursor condition that often precedes a multiple myeloma diagnosis.
Common symptoms of multiple myeloma include:
-Bone pain, especially in your spine or chest
-Constipation
-Nausea
-Fatigue
-Weakness or numbness in your legs
