Matt Holness

A creative mind that resonates through most of our dark places has once again found our thoughts in the Penthouse. An artist that satirized the American action genre from the 80’s with Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace; if you’ve not watched it yet, hit the links below to bask in all it’s comedic glory. Cheers, Mr. Holness.

The Lone Ranger

Debuting on U.S. radio waves back in 1933, the character of the Lone Ranger can be seen as one of America’s earliest (dare we say first?) Superheroes. Heavily rooted in rootin’, tootin’ American sensibility, the Lone Ranger added a touch of intrigue with the mask and his trusty steed, Silver. With a slew of merchandise, adoration, and later a successful television show, to say Americans were captivated by the mysterious gunslinger would be an understatement. In our opinion, the Lone Ranger perfectly embodies an American hero; namely, someone who is bold, brash, and does not hesitate to use force to protect those in need. Pictured below is Brace Beemer, one of a handful of radio personalities to voice the Lone Ranger back in the early 30’s.

This Week’s Dope

Chuck’s Dope

If you’re a He-Man and the Masters of the Universe fan, you owe it to yourself to check out Eric Theriault’s recent He-Man inspired episode of his famed Talking with Myself podcast. Relive everything that was great about the cartoon series and Mattel’s revolutionary toy line… complete with vintage toy commercials! I’ve long been a fan of Eric’s brand of humor and fun, couple that with some Masters talk and I’m in 80’s nirvana. Even if you’re not a fan of He-Man, I still highly recommend giving a listen to Talking with Myself. It’s a great ‘cast! Cheers, Eric! Look forward to the next episode.

Curtis’ Dope

Some shows catch a buzz early- Last year that was Nick Pizzolattos’ True Detective, it was a cocktail of intrigue the likes people hadn’t tasted before. But this season the concrete jungle of Los Angeles hasn’t treated him so well and the fans have been more than vocal. Lost in all that souring was a Scene at the end of episode 6, a party of sorts. Allow your ear to find the score by John Adams, Michael Tilson Thomas, San Francisco Symphony. This ponderous score torments the ear as we see an evening turn into chaos.
