They talk about hiking as kids and with kids all over the country, what kind of snacks can keep them all moving and they answer the question: “What have you learned from hiking with your kids?” More about Jennifer: I have always had a love for nature, ever since as far back as I can remember. I started “hiking” and adventuring in grade school, in the large expanse of woods, creeks, and farmlands behind my grandparents home . I would spend hours finding all sorts of animals and plants. I loved climbing on everything and playing in the water. My first two children were born in the 90s and I did my best to instill in them a love of nature and a respect for the Earth. When they were little we lived with a 761 acre park right in our backyard. We would spend all day in the forest and hiking out and back in the creek at the bottom of the gorge there. On the weekends we would hike at other local parks or travel to the Natural Bridge State Resort Park in KY. We are now a combined family with 12 kids. In the last 28 years I have traveled to 2 countries and all but 8 states. We can’t wait to explore more and revisit some. I have frequently been hiking with a child on my front and/or back. I enjoy hiking with my family and the Tri-State Hiking and Events Group, caving with the Louisville Grotto, and have many other hobbies and diy interests. In this episode, Courtney talks with Nick Buchanan, one of the founders of the Tri-State Events Hiking Group in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. They talk about why Nick chose hiking as a way to improve his physical health, the surprising hiking challenges that can be found in the tri state area, how “outdoor people” tend to be so friendly and Nick answers the question - “How did you find hiking buddies?” More about Nick: “I am a divorced father of one son that loves to spend time with his son. I am a mechanical engineer by trade but explorer by hobby. I hiked as a kid with my grandparents but as life got busy busy I lost this hobby. Late 2019 I was the most out of shape ever at 245 lbs. I found myself with high blood pressure and I decided I needed to make some changes to my life if I wanted to live a long healthy life. Around Christmas time 2019 I started hiking. I hiked mostly by myself early 2020 but I did find a few friends to hike with time to time. When Covid hit I was sent to work at home. I really started walking, hiking, and working out daily. It kind of became an obsession and I at one time was averaging 25k steps a day. I also got myself down to 190 lbs. One thing i decided was I would like others to hike with when my friends were not available. I tried some hiking groups on Facebook and it didn’t seem I could get anyone together the first couple times. Then I finally found a group of 4 to hike with for Fathers Day 2019. This led to a couple hikes and to a Facebook messenger chat where we could plan future hikes. This chat was getting crazy and it was mentioned why don’t you make it a group. I had no idea what that entailed so Holly now my fellow admin help put it together. Within a few days we grew to a few hundred members This was the beginning of an amazing adventure. I have had a chance to explore many amazing places and met so many great people that are like my family now. This has also led to me meeting to the most amazing person to share my life with. This has led me and my girlfriend to many great adventures together too. The outdoor world is amazing and I have been so pleasantly surprised the amazing people I have met there in the last 3 years. I am feel so lucky to have an amazing group to hike and enjoy the outdoor world with now. We have now grown to over 20k members.” Follow Nick: https://instagram.com/tristate_in_oh_ky_hiking_event?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= https://www.facebook.com/groups/738968110186085/?ref=share_group_link https://www.linkedin.com/in/nick-buchanan-4ab42218 Remember, I'd love to hear from you on any topic that comes up in the show or if you know someone that would be a great guest for the show. In this episode, Courtney talks with Maren “Wizard” Wahle. They talk about the challenges of hiking in the sun, whether social media documentation is a great idea and they answer the question: What is it like to hike internationally? About Maren: My name is Maren, I'm 28 years old, and I was born and raised in Germany. My parents emigrated to Michigan about 9 years ago; I made the move to join them full-time in February 2021, after finishing my Bachelor's degree in English and German philology at the University of Stuttgart. Since I didn't quite know what to do with myself yet when I got here, I figured it would be an excellent time to go live in the woods for a while. So, in April 2021, I headed down to Georgia to start my thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. I summited Mount Katahdin on October 2nd - and knew immediately that I wanted to get back out there. I took a break from long distance trails in 2022 for several reasons, but in February 2023 I got the chance to join some friends from the AT on the Florida Trail - what was supposed to be a little 2 week section hike turned into a 740-mile-5-week adventure. Now I'm back in Michigan and making final preparations to head out for my PCT thru-hike attempt in a few weeks! (And then I guess back to Florida next January to finish up the Florida Trail...?) About Lee: “My name is Lee but on the trail, on YouTube, socials, and even at work I am known as Boots (a name I came by honest). I have also been called a LAD (as opposed to LASH) as I routinely hike longer dayhikes (20+ miles). Last year along with my often times hiking partner, Steps, held our first Hike for Healing event in which we successfully completed the Tour de LeConte hiking over 45 miles in less than 24 hours. Through ongoing conversation, lots more interest, and vastly increased participation, we are having a Hike for Healing 2023 in which we will attempt to complete segment 1 of the Mountains to Sea Trail in less than 24 hours. I love my family, I love the outdoors, creating Youtube content, and I love hiking and exploring. He is a graduate of Davidson College and the Vanderbilt University School of Law. Chris enjoyed a long and successful legal career in Memphis, Tennessee, first as an assistant district attorney and then doing personal injury defense litigation as staff counsel for two insurance companies.
