Ep. 119 👶🏾Y our voice matters in the delivery room. But is anyone truly listening? The reality is, Black women face higher risks during childbirth—but you don’t have to navigate this journey alone. A doula can be your advocate, your guide, and your support system, ensuring that your birth plan is heard and honored. In this episode of Healthy Illness , Kelly Marie breaks down the difference between doulas and midwives, why holistic birth support is more important than ever, and how you can take control of your birthing experience. Plus, she’s offering a FREE session to help you create a birth plan tailored to your needs. Key Takeaways: Black women in the U.S. face significantly worse maternal health outcomes compared to their white counterparts. Midwives are medically trained professionals who provide clinical care during childbirth, distinct from doctors. Doulas offer non-clinical support focused on preparing and supporting pregnant individuals through childbirth and beyond. 🎙️ Hosted by Coach Kelly Marie, founder of Front Seat Life 📲 Instagram @thefrontseatlife FB @thefrontseatlife , Email KellyMarie@FrontSeatLife.com 🎧 Produced & edited by JazzCast Pros 🔗 Click Here to rate & review on Apple Podcasts 🚀 Rate & Share this Podcast from Spotify 🔐 Add this show to your collection on Pandora. 💪 Support the Show with a one-time donation on PayPal 🎧 Tap in now—because your safety, your peace of mind, and your birth experience matter. #HealthyIllnessPodcast #BlackMaternalHealth #DoulasVsMidwives Learn more about your ad choices. Ep. 117 After six months away from the mic, I’m finally back. In this episode of Healthy Illness , I’m opening up about where I’ve been, what’s changed, and how my journey has led me to become a birth doula. I also reflect on the power of community, and how my support system—including JazzCast Pros and my closest friends—helped me navigate these challenging times. The weight of the election, the reality that America still isn’t ready for a woman President, and the painful cuts to programs that support Black and Brown communities hit me hard. I needed time to process, to heal, and to figure out my next steps. If you’re feeling the weight of the world, you’re not alone. What is health and why do we get sick? In this episode, we're going to discuss what makes up a person's health and the risk factors of disease and why those health drivers overly impact black and brown residents of Erie and Monroe Counties. By the end of the podcast, you will be able to identify the social determinants of health and understand how those social determinants of health have an impact on your health. Welcome to the Healthy Illness podcast. Health is multifaceted, with only 30% attributed to personal health behaviors, while the remaining 70% is influenced by social determinants of health. These include economic stability, education quality, neighborhood environment, access to healthcare, and social support systems. These external factors shape our ability to make healthy lifestyle choices and access necessary healthcare services. This episode is brought to you by Hustle for Health Programs, with support from Health Research Incorporated and New York State Health Department. SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH Social Determinants of Health - Healthy People 2030 | health.gov Social determinants of health (SDOH) have a major impact on people’s health, well-being, and quality of life. Examples of SDOH include: Safe housing, transportation, and neighborhoods Racism, discrimination, and violence Education, job opportunities, and income Access to nutritious foods and physical activity opportunities Polluted air and water Language and literacy skills SDOH also contribute to wide health disparities and inequities. For example, people who don't have access to grocery stores with healthy foods are less likely to have good nutrition. That raises their risk of health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity — and even lowers life expectancy relative to people who do have access to healthy foods. Just promoting healthy choices won't eliminate these and other health disparities. Instead, public health organizations and their partners in sectors like education, transportation, and housing need to take action to improve the conditions in people's environments.
