When Joel found out he wasn’t going away for the weekend, it seemed dumb to not talk about the big news and premieres of the week, so Jason and Joel got together on Friday and talked about them (By the way, when we talk about subjects we’re discussing later, “later” really means AFT #142 ):

  • We start by talking about Extant, why it’s less dumb than Under the Dome, but not exactly a prestige project. We wonder why Halle Berry took the part, if network interference made it just ordinary, and if she got more than she bargained for. We also why she openly is complaining in interviews that filming the show is a “grind” (00:00 – 20:02),
  • Then we talk about the second season premiere of The Bridge, why the show was so up and down last season, how lost we were during the premiere, and if it’s setting itself up to be better this year (20:02 – 32:48),
  • Finally, we have an hour-long blowout about the Emmy nominations. Who we thought got screwed, like Tatiana Maslany, James Spader, Elisabeth Moss and Brooklyn Nine-Nine; why shows like Orphan Black and The Americans will never be on the academy’s radar; the fact that the categories of Drama, Comedy and Miniseries/Movie are pretty much meaningless right now; why an actor who was on for a full season can still be nominated as a “guest actor”; why Don Cheadle, Matt LeBlanc, and Edie Falco keep getting nods; the pleasant surprises; how the categories can be reconfigured, and more (32:48 – 1:31:16).

You can listen to the podcast above (if you don’t hear anything, fiddle with the volume slider), download it via this link, subscribe to our RSS feed, or subscribe via iTunes. You can also find us on the Stitcher radio app for smartphones and iPads. By the way, the bumper music is “Trevor Trailer Trash” from the late, great band Cropduster.
