"The basic premise of the event is that hunters hunt rattlesnakes from the surrounding environment all across West Texas, and bring them into the roundup for the weekend. And during the roundup, these snakes are kept in a pit and then, one by one, beheaded and skinned in front of in front of audiences." - Elizabeth MeLampy Elizabeth MeLampy is a lawyer dedicated to animal rights and protection, and her passion for this work shines through in her latest book, Forget the Camel, the Madcap World of Animal Festivals and What They Say About Being Human . To research the book, Elizabeth traveled across the country, immersing herself in a wide range of animal festivals — from the Iditarod dog sled race to the rattlesnake roundup in Sweetwater, Texas. Elizabeth examines these festivals as revealing microcosms of our broader relationship with animals. Whether it's rattlesnake hunts, frog-jumping contests, ostrich races, or groundhog celebrations, these events reflect the ways humans use animals to express cultural identity, community pride, and historical traditions. Yet beneath the pageantry and excitement lies a deeper question: Is our fascination with these spectacles worth the toll it takes on the animals involved? With compassion and insight, Elizabeth invites readers to consider whether there’s a more ethical and empathetic way to honor our stories — one that respects both animals and the traditions they inspire. Please listen, share and read, Forget the Camel. It will be released on April 8th, 2025. https://apollopublishers.com/index.php/forget-the-camel/…

Knucklehead, a YA poetry collection by Tony Keith, Jr., PhD., is written as a series of letters to Black boys and men, especially the gay and queer ones, that is full of black-and-white illustrations and unforgettable poetry that will heal, provoke and inspire. While society often assigns the label “knucklehead” to kids with attitude problems, this brilliant and electric poetry collection by spoken word poet and hip-hop educator Tony Keith Jr. subverts that narrow way of thinking and empathizes with young people who are misunderstood and unheard. “A love letter in verse to Black boys and men….Will resonate deeply with readers and poets on a path of self-discovery.”

Most of us have seen news reports about workplace surveillance, cyberstalking, ransomware attacks, and facial recognition and ignore them willfully, but know deep down that our privacy is disappearing in the face of wondrous technological marvels. But it is never too late to protect your own privacy, even for those who don’t want to live off the grid without cell phones or internet access. Written in blunt jargon-free prose, ON PRIVACY: Twenty Lessons to Live By (Workman Publishing; March 4, 2025; $20 Hardcover) by Lawrence Cappello defines today's privacy landscape while also reminding readers of the joys of keeping things to ourselves. Authored by an award-winning professor of U.S. legal & constitutional history and a certified information privacy professional (CIPP/US & CIPM) ON PRIVACY helps readers understand and explains clearly why privacy matters and explains in brief digestible chapters how you can better protect your privacy while still enjoying the pleasures and conveniences of the modern world, for example: Worried about your private information being shared on the internet? All of your devices have privacy settings. Take five minutes to learn how to use them. A few quick adjustments can make a real difference in protecting your personal information. When locking your phone, go with an old-fashioned four- or six-digit passcode over biometrics like Face ID and fingerprint readers. It’s getting easier to replicate faces and thumbprints. It remains harder to hack someone’s brain. What about your online history and reputation? The idea of retaking control over your personal data may feel overwhelming, but it’s easier than you think. For a fee, online reputation management professionals will scour the internet on your behalf to identify who has your information, get it deleted or corrected, and continue monitoring your online persona as new items pop up. It’s called ORM (online reputation management). Look it up and see if it’s a fit for you. What about protecting your friends’ and loved ones’ privacy?Be a privacy-conscious friend on social media. Don’t tag people in photos or share their location without their permission. Nor should you post personal information they’ve shared with you—like a pregnancy, or a new job, or a major new purchase—without their permission. Treat their privacy like it’s your own and they’ll likely do the same for you. Starring Oscar nominee Steve Coogan, THE PENGUIN LESSONS is a poignant dramedy inspired by a true story, set against the backdrop of Argentina's political turmoil in 1976. Tom (Coogan), a disillusioned Englishman, arrives in Buenos Aires to teach at a prestigious boarding school, expecting an easy experience. But as the city spirals into crisis, and his students remain unteachable, Tom's life takes an unexpected turn when he rescues an oil-slicked penguin from a nearby beach. The bird's surprising loyalty and unique presence forces Tom to confront his own repressed past and awaken to the responsibilities of both personal and political change. Directed by Peter Cattaneo (THE FULL MONTY, MILITARY WIVES), this heartwarming film shows how even the most unlikely connections can spark profound change and self-discovery. Dead Groove began as a pandemic collaboration between drummer Fred Aching and bassist/vocalist Holly West has evolved into one of the scene's most promising acts. The band, completed by guitarist Cesar "Cags" Salaverry, brings together decades of professional experience, including West's current role with Zepparella, Salaverry with the Peruvian band Mauser, and Aching's performances with Kings of Thrash alongside David Ellefson, Powerflo and Bullet Boys. The successor to the band’s acclaimed self-titled debut album, Rubicon represents a significant evolution in Dead Groove's musical journey. The album's title, referencing the historic point of no return, perfectly captures the band's commitment to pushing their sonic boundaries - Fred the band describe it as presenting “a more polished iteration of Dead Groove's signature sound while maintaining the raw energy fans have come to expect.” Their interpretation of Motörhead's "Ace of Spades" demonstrates Dead Groove's artistic vision. By deliberately slowing the tempo and incorporating their characteristic groove, the band has created a fresh interpretation that both honors the original and establishes their unique musical identity. For the past three decades, Don Dahler has been a fixture on national network news covering the world's biggest stories-global wars, presidential elections, school shootings, natural disasters. Now, drawn from the journals he kept for most of his life, Don charts his unlikely rise from a teenage runaway to an award-winning correspondent and anchor in SOUVENIRS FROM AN ABSURD LIFE (Post Hill Press, February 25, 2025). As a young man, chance encounters with baseball idol Mickey Mantle and legendary sports broadcaster Dick Enberg changed the trajectory of Don's life. Rejecting the prospects of a dim, boring, unfulfilling future, he set out to tell stories that mattered. He worked his way up from local TV stations in Texas and North Carolina and went on to cover the most important stories of the times for Fox News, CNBC, ABC News, and CBS News, reporting from more than 120 countries and often living abroad for months at a time. Don was the first network correspondent to report live from the scene on 9/11 and reported extensively from Afghanistan and Iraq in the months and years that followed. As a documentary filmmaker he traveled to Calcutta, Johannesburg, Taipei, and thousands of places in between. He's interviewed Nobel Prize recipients, future presidents, Olympic champions, and countless movie stars. He's been shot (twice), had lions stalk outside his tent in Africa, tamed a wild fruit bat, and flown in an ultralight airplane over the heads of elephants. These and more incredible adventures are collected in SOUVENIRS FROM AN ABSURD LIFE, a memoir that is full of humor, heart, and grit-and also nine-lives-level luck and good timing. Don's insider's account of the highly competitive world of network news also revisits a bygone era of broadcast journalism-one with robust budgets and an appetite for foreign reporting. And he reveals which stars aren't who they pretend to be, how his reporting on 9/11 was co-opted by conspiracy theorists, and what goes on behind the scenes of the country's powerful media channels. From a host of The Daily Show and stand-up comic, Michael Kosta, comes a wildly funny and insightful memoir about his unlikely journey from professional tennis player (#864 in the world) to professional comedian (there's no ranking system in comedy but he's probably . . . top 50?). Before Michael Kosta was performing stand-up comedy specials and hosting The Daily Show , he was a professional tennis "star," reaching the lofty heights of the #864 ranked men's singles player in the world. Stop laughing. That's better than your world ranking. As a tennis pro, Kosta traveled across the globe, competing in such exotic locales as the Netherlands, Tokyo, and even rural Illinois before deciding to put down his racket and pursue a more stable and predictable career: comedy. In a completely unexpected and wild journey through the backwaters of professional tennis, Kosta shows the unlikely ways life on the court prepared him for life in front of a microphone. Like comedy, tennis is brutally competitive, and most people lose at it. Unlike comedy, no one in tennis puts a gun on the table as they count out your earnings in twenty-dollar bills at the end of the night. And then there are the things that have more to do with what happens to you-and what you end up learning-as part of growing up. Topics include: how to properly discard an unwanted European hard-boiled egg, giving CPR to your dead grandpa, cringe-worthy "sex" in the Red Light District, crying so hard in a car that strangers call the cops, and also happy things like what it feels like when your dreams come true. From misadventures in tennis to the humbling setbacks of comedy, Lucky Loser is a heart-filled story of making your own luck, the universal experience of failure, and the many ways in which we all inevitably lose on the way to success.
