What approach to the future will help ensure that the 10 billion people expected to be on the planet in 30 years have enough to eat, enough energy, enough water and a livable climate?
Charles Mann has been thinking about two different approaches to the future. Prophets think we are doomed unless we cut back on our consumption and spread the bounty that remains. Wizards figure that new innovations from science and technology, properly applied, will create solutions to these looming crises. Are we unique among living species? Can we evolve and adapt to our limitations. Dinosaurs might say no, but birds would have a different answer.
