But this has brought them into conflict in areas dominated by the Alawite sect, the group from which President Assad drew much of his support. Hamas has agreed to release 10 living hostages and 18 bodies in its response to the US's Gaza ceasefire proposals. The group said under the deal Israel would release a number of Palestinian prisoners. Israel is yet to respond. Earlier this week, the White House said Israel had "signed off" on Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff's plan. At least 54,381 people have been killed in Gaza during the war, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry.Hamas pledges to free 10 living hostages but seeks permanent ceasefire in response to US plan Subscribe here: http://bit.ly/1rbfUog For more news, analysis and features visit: www.bbc.com/news #BBCNews…

After nine months in space, Nasa astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams arrived back on Earth. They were taking part in the first crewed test flight of the Starliner spacecraft, developed by aerospace company Boeing. But the capsule suffered several technical problems during its journey to the space station, and it was deemed too risky to take the astronauts home. Two months after their return to Earth, BBC's Reagan Morris spoke to them and looked back at their extraordinary mission. Subscribe here: http://bit.ly/1rbfUog #Nasa #BBCNews…

US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth has warned of China posing an "imminent" threat to Taiwan, while urging Asian countries to boost defence spending and work with the US to deter war. Hegseth also said that while the US does not "seek to dominate or strangle China", the US would not be pushed out of Asia and would not allow intimidation of allies. He was addressing top Asian military officials at the Shangri-la Dialogue, a high-level defence summit held annually in Singapore. Many in Asia fear potential instability if China invades Taiwan, a self-governing island claimed by Beijing. China has not ruled out the use of force. President Donald Trump has announced the US will double its current tariff rate on steel and aluminium imports from 25% to 50%, starting on Wednesday. Speaking at a rally in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Trump said the move would help boost the local steel industry and national supply, while reducing reliance on China. Trump also said that $14bn would be invested in the area's steel production through a partnership between US Steel and Japan's Nippon Steel, though he later told reporters he had yet to see or approve the final deal. The announcement is the latest turn in Trump's rollercoaster approach to tariffs since re-entering office in January. Gerry Adams, the former leader of Sinn Féin, has won his libel case against the BBC and been awarded €100,000 in damages by a court in Dublin. Mr Adams sued the BBC over a 2016 programme and online report, in which an anonymous source alleged that he had sanctioned the murder of a British agent, Denis Donaldson. Mr Adams described the claim as “a grievous smear”. The BBC had argued that the words were couched as allegations but Adams argued they were presented as fact. Speaking outside court, Adams says the case could have been resolved a long time ago, adding he was “very mindful of the Donaldson family” throughout the trial. The BBC said it was disappointed with the jury’s decision with its Northern Ireland director saying: “it was important that we defend our journalism and we stand by that decision”. Gerry Adams was the president of Irish republican party Sinn Féin from 1983 until 2018. He has consistently denied being a member of the IRA. The UN's humanitarian chief has said people in Gaza are being subjected to forced starvation by Israel. Tom Fletcher said he believed this had led to a change in the international response to Gaza, in an interview with the BBC. Israel began to allow limited aid into Gaza last week, after an almost three-month blockade had halted the delivery of supplies. It also resumed its military offensive two weeks after imposing the blockade, ending a two-month ceasefire with Hamas. Israel said the steps were intended to put pressure on the armed group to release the 58 hostages still held in Gaza. US President Donald Trump can keep collecting import taxes for now, an appeals court has said, a day after a trade ruling found the bulk of his global tariffs to be illegal. A federal appeals court granted a bid from the White House to temporarily suspend the lower court's order, which ruled that Trump had overstepped his power by imposing the duties. Wednesday's judgement from the US Court of International Trade drew the ire of Trump officials, who called it an example of judicial overreach. Small businesses and a group of states had challenged the measures, which are at the heart of Trump's agenda and have shaken up the world economic order. US President Donald Trump has appeared to set a two-week deadline for Vladimir Putin to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine, threatening a different response if the Russian counterpart was still stringing him along. The president’s comments come after Kremlin escalated its attacks on Ukraine. The bombardments by Russia are said to have been some of the largest and deadliest attacks since the start of the war. Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said he had spoken to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio about concrete proposals to be presented at a new round of direct talks with Ukraine next week in Istanbul. The UN's World Food Programme (WFP) says that "hordes of hungry people" have broken into a food supply warehouse in central Gaza. Two people are reported to have died and several others injured in the incident, the programme said, adding that it was still confirming details. Footage showed thousands of people breaking into the Al-Ghafari warehouse in Deir Al-Balah and taking bags of flour and cartons of food as gunshots rang out. It was not immediately clear where the gunshots came from or who fired them. Meanwhile, Israeli ministers say 22 new Jewish settlements have been approved in the occupied West Bank - the biggest expansion in decades. The issue of settlements - which are widely seen as illegal under international law, though Israel disputes this - is one of the most contentious areas of dispute between Israel and the Palestinians.
