In this episode, we had the honour of having a long conversation with world-renowned researcher and professor Dr. Stuart McGill. Dr. McGill is a professor emeritus, University of Waterloo, where he was a professor for 30 years. His laboratory and experimental research clinic investigated issues related to the causal mechanisms of back pain, how to rehabilitate back-pained people and enhance both injury resilience and performance. His advice is often sought by governments, corporations, legal experts, medical groups and elite athletes and teams from around the world.

We asked him many questions about the biopsychosocial model of pain, chopping firewood and drinking beer, the frustrations of being misrepresented and his words being taken out of context, why he has distanced himself from social media, how he got into his current research of studying pain during certain sexual positions, why treating people with compassion is important, why "degenerative disk disease" isn't a useful term, how the communication of a diagnosis can be harmful to a patient, how he has learned to manage situations where he has failed a patient, the importance of understanding the psycho-social factors of pain, why a strong back isn't necessarily a pain-free back, why the Big 3 isn't for everyone, the importance of being precise in your language when communicating, whether imaging is useless for diagnosing pain, his own exercise routine, how a psycho-social "diagnosis" can be used as a cop-out by some clinicians, and being damn good human.

We appreciate your feedback as always! Rate, review, shares, and comments all help us grow the show. Thanks for listening!
