In today's episode I talk to an incredible photographer, fellow Londoner and friend, James Burns. James is a powerful photographer documenting London through his work 'London from the Rooftop' and works with many clients to photograph buildings and architecture across London. We talk about the pressing issue for most business owners, how to mobilise your audience; how important identity is within your business and the power of showing up on your platforms and in person as yourself. Finally we talk about legacy. What legacy do you want to leave with your work.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on today's episode.

About James:

James Burns is the Founder of London From the Rooftop and is on a mission to capture, communicate and celebrate the London that shaped him.

His teenage years were marked by a curiosity and fascination with his surroundings, a connection nurtured by his love for the musical culture of drum n bass that echoed round the London streets and was ‘our’ thing, a ‘London thing’.

This connection to the music and the city inspired him to go on two-wheeled excursions to far flung exotic destinations such as Lambeth, Hackney, and Stratford, just to mooch about the nooks and crannies. His journeys led through the back streets, to the housing estates, the top floors of tower blocks and eventually to the rooftops. Something compelled him to explore London’s remote aerial limits so he could build in his head his very own version of what the black cabbies call ‘The Knowledge’.

The journey started in some form in the late 1990’s but it really began to take shape in 2003 when he realised how the camera was the easiest way for him to express and document this growing connection that he felt with London. Supported by the Princes Trust through to photographing for the Olympics 2012 saw James's first exhibition of his body of work.

The mission goes on, London never stops and neither does his enthusiasm for it’s wonderful energy, diversity, architecture and culture.
