Our next featured small business advisor this season is Dr. Shanta Harrison. She has over 25 years working for and with local, state, and federal government. Her career began as a high school student working as a Page in the Louisiana Senate and progressed into various leadership roles throughout American government.

It was during a particular change in a gubernatorial administration that Dr. Harrison found herself without a job. In response, she started her own consultancy uncovering the power of government contracts in the process. Little did she know that it would be the start of a journey that would prove the importance of mentorship, perseverance, and staying true to one's purpose in achieving success.

She also currently serves as the Deputy Assistant Director for Communications and Outreach for the City of Houston's Housing and Community Development Department. This role, in addition to her own business, enables her to impact lives through both policymaking and entrepreneurship. With a unique perspective on both sides of the government coin, Dr. Harrison is well-equipped to guide small business owners through securing government contracts and certifications.

In this episode, Dr. Harrison schools us on how to:

  • Leverage census data to secure funding for small businesses,
  • Determine which business certifications can increase your chances of getting certain government contracts,
  • Keep your overhead low by tapping into various free small business consulting services, and much more!

Dr. Harrison also makes the case for engaging and collaborating with local politicians and government outreach initiatives to support small businesses. Includes a surprise revelation at the end of the episode!
