Jerry Hartman arrived in Buies Creek in 1979 as a sophomore transfer in the Campbell University wrestling program. Little did he know that two years later, he would be leading that same team as head coach – while still an undergraduate. Campbell started its wrestling team in the 1960s and was guided by Gerald Brown, Ike Sherlock, and PJ Smith to national recognition during the NAIA era. As the team transitioned to NCAA Division I, a native of Illinois, by way of UCF, would lay the foundation of a program that now ranks among the nation's best. Dale Steele literally built the Campbell Football program from the ground up. He arrived in Buies Creek in 2006 and spent the next two years putting together facilities, a staff and roster in time for the program to relaunch in 2008 after a 58-year hiatus. Coach Steele brought a quarter century of college football coaching experience to Campbell and turned the program into a winner in just four short years. The son of a high school coach and graduate of the University of South Carolina, where he played on the offensive and defensive lines, Dale began a coaching career that lasted more than 45 years when he took a graduate assistant position at Ball State in 1977. Over the years, his travels took him to Wisconsin, Tulane, Wichita State, Kansas State, East Carolina, Baylor, East Tennessee and Elon before he and his family moved to Harnett County in 2006. Among the many accomplishments of his career, include five bowl trips and back-to-back FCS national titles while he was on the staff at James Madison. Now retired, he has served as an advisor to current Campbell head coach Braxton Harris and is involved with the Myrtle Beach Bowl, while he and his wife Pam spend as much time as possible with their grand kids. Earlier this year, Coach Steele was inducted into the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame. In the next installment of Tales from the Creek, Campbell Hall of Fame member Dale Steele talks with Stan Cole about his paths to Campbell, starting a football program from scratch, and more.…

In the early days of Campbell's transition to NCAA Division I competition – folks who were around campus knew Buies Creek not just as home to a budding law school and an intimate undergraduate setting, but also as a training ground for some of the nation's – and world's – best decathletes. Orville Peterson and Ernie White both transferred to Campbell to train with the legendary Coach Brant Tolsma. Before their time was finished, both earned All-America honors and represented their country in the most grueling competition in track and field. After their training and competitive careers ended, Orville and Ernie both went on to work with young athletes and were both inducted into the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame. In the next installment of Tales from the Creek, Campbell Hall of Fame members Orville Peterson and Ernie White talk with Stan Cole about their paths to Campbell, training in Buies Creek, competing all over the nation, and more.…

A decade ago, Ryan Thompson was a key figure in Campbell's rise to a mid-major baseball power and regular NCAA postseason participant. In the last five seasons, he has gone on to reach the major leagues and pitch in two World Series. After a standout junior college career in the Pacific Northwest Ryan crossed the country to join the Fighting Camels and helped his team win 90 games over two seasons. He led the nation and was Big South pitcher of the year in 2013 and led the Camels to their first NCAA postseason berth in 24 years one year later. Drafted by the Houston Astros, Ryan steadily moved up the minor league ladder – faced a serious surgery – then joined the Tampa Bay Rays and played an important role in their 2020 American League Championship run. Three years later, he was again pitching in the World Series – this time for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Through the years, Ryan has stayed in close contact with his Campbell roots, making regular visits – most recently for a Baseball Alumni gathering around Homecoming in Buies Creek. In the next installment of Tales from the Creek, Campbell baseball alum Ryan Thompson talks with Stan Cole about growing up in Oregon, his path to Campbell, playing college baseball, reaching the big leagues, his personal faith and more.…

Sixty years ago, when basketball fans jammed old Carter Gym for the Harnett County high school championship, little did anyone know that those in attendance would be witnesses to history. That night – February 29, 1964 – Boone Trail and Angier played a game that lasted 13 overtimes before Boone Trail won 56-54. No basketball game on the high school, college or professional level has lasted as long. Frank Stewart was a senior guard for the Boone Trail Pioneers and led all scorers that night with 29 points. He graduated and enrolled at Campbell in the fall of 1964, where he played under legendary coach Fred McCall. Along the way, Frank played an important role on Campbell teams that later became an NAIA powerhouse. He graduated, moved into the teaching and coaching profession, raised three kids, but stayed in touch with his teammates and opponents from the 13-overtime game. In the next installment of Tales from the Creek, Stan Cole talks with Frank Stewart about growing up in Harnett County, the 13-overtime game, his path to Campbell and his six-decade journey since Leap Day 1964.…

Valentine's Day is celebrated on February 14 and to recognize that occasion, we have a special Tales from the Creek episode that we like to call "Love in the Creek." Scott and Sara Jackson and Tony and Ellen Peacock are two of the many couples who met during their undergraduate careers, fell in love, married, and have built a life together. Scott Jackson, class of '98 played seven different positions on the Campbell Baseball team, while Sara Moore, class of 2001 was a starting guard on Campbell's ASUN title-winning 2000 squad and 2001 women's basketball regular season champs. Tony Peacock, class of '96, was a four-year starter who helped the Camels win Big South men's soccer titles in '92 (tournament) and '93 (regular season) and finish as ASUN runner-up in '95 and '96. Ellen Price, class of '97, helped Campbell win its first women's soccer championship in 1993 and reach the ASUN final two years later. After graduation, Scott and Sara were married and they began a journey together that took them to Wilmington, Chapel Hill, and now to Lynchburg, Va., where Scott is the head baseball coach at Liberty University. Tony and Ellen moved to Atlanta in 1998 and have made their home there since among a large international population. In the next installment of Tales from the Creek, Stan Cole talks with Scott, Sara, Tony, and Ellen about how they met at Campbell and their journey as couples and parents.…

Before the days of specialization, top-level athletes played multiple sports through high school and sometimes into college. Barbara Foxx did that and more when she enrolled at Campbell in 1975. Not only did she star for the Campbell basketball and softball teams, but she also played on the short-lived field hockey squad. After earning accolades in two sports and earning outstanding female athlete honors twice, she took a teaching and coaching job at Pinecrest High School – and stayed for 38 years. Barbara didn't play volleyball at Campbell. She graduated seven years before the Fighting Camels added that sport. But she became one of the most successful high school volleyball coaches in the state's history. And she didn't just turn in her sneakers, cleats and glove after graduation, but went on to become one of the top slow pitch softball players in the nation. For her efforts, Barbara is a member of the 2024 Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame induction class, marking the fourth Hall in which she has been so honored.
