Part 1 of our powerful interview with Katy Schomburg, a 37 year old teacher, wife, and mother of two who was diagnosed with breast cancer on June 15, 2017. THIS IS HER STORY.
Katy talks about:
- What led to her breast cancer diagnosis
- How she formulated her plan of action for her summer and going forward
- Her road to mastectomy surgery, how she prepared, and what was involved
- The discovery of the BRCA gene in her family and how insurance companies prevent people from getting genetic testing. We were shocked to learn that some states require THREE positive familial results of the BRCA gene before insurance companies will cover genetic testing.
- How she told her young kids and their reactions
- How her husband helped her become open to receiving support from others
- Dealing with a second surgery to make sure nothing was left behind from the first surgery
- News about her cancer and treatment options from her oncologist who tells her she needs chemotherapy based on the recurrence rate of her cancer
- Her wisdom about NOT googling anything and just listening and trusting her medical team
- The timeline of her chemo treatments and how the beginning of her chemo is going
- How the support of others has taken her off-guard and has carried her through these hard times
We can all learn from Katy's outlook and approach. She is changing the face of cancer with her wisdom and positivity. In learning to accept help for herself, she is helping others.
