Bring on the bleakness. This week Rohan and Mariana discuss a trio of downbeat dramas and try not to tear up too much. Andrew Haigh's latest film Lean on Pete takes the Yorkshireman to Portland, Oregon in a coming-of-age drama about one lost boy and his knackered racehorse. Beast is the Jersey-set feature debut of Michael Pearce, starring Jessie Buckley and Johnny Flynn as the wayward twentysomethings who may or may not be the Channel Islands answer to Hindley and Brady. Finally, the French feature debut of Xavier Legrand, Custody, puts a dangerous domestic family breakdown under the microscope, for one of the tensest releases of the year, thus far. This week we are also joined by Jessie Moroney, the programmer of Filmhouse, Edinburgh's Growing Pains strand, which screens a monthly dose of films about, for, or of interest to young people. Jessie discusses the forthcoming screening of Terry Zwigoff and Daniel Clowes' millennial angst collaboration Ghost World, which is screening at 13:15 on Saturday 19th May at the Filmhouse on Lothian Road, as well as talking at length about how Growing Pains came into being and some of the highlights from the past few years. As ever Producer Matt is onboard to give a little bit of acerbic bite to proceedings. Keep watching and Stay Caffeinated!
