An MEP for this region believes that Media Minister Catherine Martin is making a mistake in not offering funding and supports for local radio stations. It comes as Minister Martin is due to announce a funding model for broadcast media after scandals in the nation's State Broadcaster RTÉ Its claimed local radio plays a vital role in Irish life and that the government should prevent what has been seen in the US and UK media markets where many local radio stations have shut down. Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú, says the importance of local radio stations was seen through the coverage of the recent local and European elections.
