Biography.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Babla & Kanchan were an Indian husband-wife musical group best known for work in the chutney music and Desi Folk music genres. They performed together for forty years until Kanchan died in 2004. Originating from Mumbai, India, their music is well known through the world, especially in countries like Canada, United States, Trinidad, Guyana, the Netherlands, Mauritius, Suriname and England. Babla is the younger brother of famous music director Kalyanji Anandji.

Babla, A Drummer, Percussionist, Live Performer, Music Composer & Producer, (ORIGINAL NAME – LAXMICHAND V SHAH), born 1942 from India , started his band popularly known as “Babla Orchestra” in 1962 and since then has performed more than 1000 shows across the globe.

Dandiya Raas / Garba Raas, a form of Folk Dance from the state of Gujarat was musically redefined in the 1970’s by Babla through his live Navratri Music Performances in places like India, USA, Australia, Singapore, Canada, London & many more.

He is popularly known to be the “Pioneer of Disco Dandiya” in India.

In the year 2011 Babla Shah was awarded by one of the largest private FM networks “Radio Mirchi” , the “Mirchi Music Award for the outstanding contribution to Hindi Film Music”.

He has served as a Rhythm Arranger & Music Producer in more than 100 Indian Films under the banner of veteran Music composers – Padmashree “Kalyanji Anandji”. He had started playing Rhythms in live orchestra from a very young age of eight years with his Composer Brothers . He has also composed Music for Several Indian films as a Music Director.

He also introduced the new sound of “Roto Toms” during the recording of the iconic Indian original song “Laila O laila” from the film “Qurbani” 1980 sung by his wife Kanchan.

Babla Shah is till date actively performing all across India and doing selective shows abroad.

According to film music expert Rajesh Subramanian the song “Khaike Pan Banaraswala” was composed by Babla.

After appearing in the films Rafoo Chakkar, Dharamatma, and Qurbani, Kanchan joined her husband and began performing and touring. Their engagements abroad (live shows and orchestra music) kept them away from Indian (Bombay) film music. They were popular in Caribbean countries, where they covered soca music hits such as “Hot Hot Hot” and revived older hits by chutney singer Sundar Popo. Albums including Kuch Gadbad Hai sold well because of touring support.

Kanchan’s other albums, such as Kaise Bani, were popular with the Bhojpuri audience. Her fame led to endorsement deals for brands including Johnson & Johnson.
