On Side A, we have the pleasure of heading into the pipeline as we discover the legendary King of the Surf Guitar, Dick Dale. He pioneered the surf music style and with the "breakneck speed of his single-note staccato picking technique" and showmanship with the guitar is considered a precursor to heavy metal music, influencing guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen. The Boston-born guitar icon released "Misirlou" – a Mediterranean folk tune in 1962 and it was a track he claimed to have recorded 95 times in an effort to reduce the oceans of reverb that ultimately defined surf rock. Filler will take us down his pipeline dream as we chat about the original recording of Misirlou which dates as far back as 1927! And as we make our way over to Side B, it becomes quite clear that Filler & I are gonna need a bigger boat…we have some special late night visitors to our porch. Our long time pal, Vignone, stops by to school us on A Tribe Called Quest. Vignone grew up around the block from Filler and me and was no stranger to late nights on the porch and early mornings recovering in the ocean. We have a lot of fun chatting about Tribe - in particular their album People’s Instinctive Travels & the Paths of Rythym.
