About Jason Flowers:

Jason Flowers served as the Head Boy’s Basketball Coach at Valley Christian High School in Cerritos, CA, during the 2022-23 season. Previously, he was part of the California Baptist University Women’s Basketball coaching staff from 2020 to 2022, contributing to the Lancers' historic 2020-21 season, where the team went 26-1 and won their first WAC regular season and tournament championships. Before joining CBU, Flowers had a successful tenure as the head coach of the CSUN Matadors Women’s Basketball Program from 2010 to 2020, earning two Big West Conference Coach of the Year titles and guiding the team to multiple championships.

During his time at CSUN, Flowers became the Matadors' all-time winningest coach with 150 victories, including a record-breaking 23-win season in 2014-15. His leadership helped produce numerous standout athletes, including three Conference Players of the Year, three Conference Tournament MVPs, and three Freshmen of the Year.

Flowers began his collegiate basketball career as a player for UC Irvine and UCLA before transitioning into coaching. Coaching runs in the family, as his wife, Tairia Flowers, is the head softball coach at LMU and a former U.S. Olympic gold and silver medalist. The couple has three children: daughters Jasmine and Trystin, and son Jayce.

In this episode, Justin and Jason Flowers discuss:

  • The transformational power of planning and resilience
  • The foundational role of mothers and how they shape society
  • The interplay between toughness, discipline, passion, and success
  • The synergy between soft skills, accountability, and relationship building in sports and business
  • Overcoming emotional and professional challenges in coaching

Key Takeaways:

  • Jason's journey is a testament to the impact of strong family values and a positive mindset, with him crediting his success to the lessons learned from his single mother and the conscious effort to eliminate 'can't' from his vocabulary.
  • Highlighted as pillars of resilience and persistence, mothers shape individuals who can thrive under any conditions.
  • The triumph over adversity and the cultivation of passion and discipline in young athletes are illustrated by real-world anecdotes in the podcast.
  • Authenticity in communication, personal relationships, and leadership choices are underscored as essential to personal growth and effective team dynamics.
  • Revealing deep insights into handling life's obstacles, the exploration of faith's role in uniting people, fostering forgiveness, and leading a life of contentment also advocates for an approach rooted in love and respect in diverse societies.
