Faith Bible Reading 2017

At Faith Baptist Fellowship we Love God’s Word (Psalm 119:97) and Prayer (Psalm 116:1-2)! God speaks to us through His Word. Ask Him to give you “ears to hear” and to be “doers of the word” as well.

Our plan for 2017 will take you through the key stories of the Bible in one year. The plan calls for reading one chapter of Scripture a day for six days. There will also be additional readings from two other passages that are key cross references to the main chapter. This plan shows how the many individual accounts of the Bible make up one interconnected story-God’s Story. This reading plan is also online at www.ownit365.com. On Sunday, we will have a passage from the upcoming Sunday sermon along with questions for Faith Group discussion.

We also suggest having a notebook and pen for answering questions and recording your thoughts/insights. Bring this notebook with you to Faith Group for discussions and prayer times. Select a quiet place and consistent time to read and pray.

FAITH BIBLE READING

MONDAY, JUNE 5

Read 1 Kings 1

TAI: This opening chapter chronicles the intrigue over who will reign over Israel after David. What two sons (of different mothers) are candidates for that privilege? What role did Abishag have at this time? What symbolism did Adonijah use to assert his claim to be king? What symbolism did David wisely instruct Bathsheba and Nathan to utilize in placing Solomon on the throne? Why do you think that Solomon ended up as king? Ultimately, God reigns!

PP: Praise our Lord and God who reigns over the universe. The intrigues and sagas of government and ruling are nothing new! Pray for all in governmental authority—local, state, and national (I Timothy 2:1-2). Thank God for preserving the line that will bring forth the Messiah and Savior, Jesus.

Pray for our Faith Baptist Fellowship Elder Council and pastors. Pray for wisdom as they pursue the 3 Directives. Ask God to guide you in the week ahead.

Additional readings: 1 Kings 2; Psalm 72

TUESDAY, JUNE 6

Read 1 Kings 3

TAI: What was a marriage alliance? The writer makes clear that Solomon loves the Lord! What very unusual request did Solomon ask of the Lord? Why did this please the Lord so much? Read James 1:5 (and memorize it!). How often do you ask God for wisdom? How did God add blessing on top of the wisdom? What requirement did God place before Solomon? What illustration is given of Solomon’s wisdom? Ponder that story. What impact did this wise display have upon the people?

PP: Reflect on your week. What challenges do you face? What opportunities? Ask God for wisdom in these matters! Pray the promise of James 1:5. Then thank God for hearing and answering your prayer. Thank him for his many kindnesses and graces as well. Pray for wisdom for others in your sphere of influence, and for the leaders of our church. Pray for wisdom for those who lead our country, state, and community.

Additional readings: Matthew 7:7-11; Hebrews 4:12-13

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 7

Read 1 Kings 4:20-34

TAI: God had answered Solomon’s prayer for wisdom and added wealth and success beyond it. These paragraphs detail both the great abundance given Solomon and the nation and the extensive wisdom and knowledge he possessed as well. Note the details: vast areas of knowledge and the productivity of Solomon’s mind. What impact did this have in the world at this time? Read Proverbs 1. What proverbs have you memorized?

PP: Yesterday we asked God for wisdom—do so again today! Pray through the opening lines of Proverbs 1, applying them to aspects of your life today. Express to God your love and awe and reverent fear. Thank God again for his abundant provision for you: food to eat, clothes to wear, shelter, family, friends, church family, and more. Are you married? Rejoice greatly in the spouse God has given you (Song of Solomon 1!). Delight in God’s amazing grace.

Additional Readings: Proverbs 1; Song of Solomon 1

THURSDAY, JUNE 8

Read 1 Kings 6

TAI: Think about what God asks of Solomon in vv. 11-14. It poses both an opportunity and a problem. What’s the problem? As you read the marvelous details of the temple construction, note here the particulars that stand out to you. A good study Bible may have illustrations and further explanations to help you. Reflect also on I Corinthians 6:19-20 and Ephesians 2:19-22; your body Is a temple of the Holy Spirit and God’s people are being built into a temple.

PP: Submit your body to God as a temple of the Spirit. Rejoice also that you are included in God’s forever family, part of the temple God is building which is the church. Thank God that though we sin and fall short, through Christ we receive forgiveness as we trust in him, and his righteousness is imputed to us.

Pray for the upcoming summer VBS, for Angela and her team.

Additional Readings: Psalm 127; Ephesians 2:19-22

FRIDAY, JUNE 9

Read 1 Kings 8

TAI: Wow! What an amazing prayer Solomon prays. It is in three parts: he blesses the Lord, he dedicates the temple, and then he offers a benediction. Please note here the gospel elements that can be found in this prayer.

What can you learn about prayer from this chapter? Make a list of words, phrases, and concepts that you would like to include in your own prayer. (Pray God’s word!)

PP: Now pray a prayer that is inspired, helped, and encouraged by Solomon’s prayer. Bless the name of God with praise and adoration. Dedicate yourself and your family to the Lord. Pray the gospel! And include a final blessing (a benediction) that takes to heart the many promises of God to us.

Additional Readings: 1 Kings 9:1-9; 1 Kings 11:9-10

SATURDAY JUNE 10

Read 1 Kings 10:1-13

TAI: The story of the Queen of Sheba’s visit is a further confirmation of both the great wisdom given to Solomon and his grand wealth and prosperity. It is also another illustration of the power of reputation. She could not believe all that she heard about Solomon, but remarkably it was all true! It all took her breath away, astounding as it was. Was the queen impressed with Solomon, or with the God of Solomon? Are people impressed with you? Or are they amazed at the God you love and serve?

PP: Ask God to give you a reputation that both pleases him and reflects his amazing grace in your life. Tell God that you want to deflect any credit or praise to him and give him all the glory. Ask God to spread the fame of Christ’s name to all the nations, so that the peoples of the earth hear the good news and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation.

Tomorrow is Sunday #2 in our Gospel Tool Belt summer series. Ask God to help you listen carefully so you can share wisely.

Additional Readings: Matthew 12:42; 1 Peter 3:15

SUNDAY, JUNE 11

Read John 3:1-21

TAI & PP: Jesus receives the inquiring Nicodemus at night. The exchange between them is a great example of listening, asking questions, and answering questions. Note the questions Nicodemus asks, as well as how our Lord answers. Note also the questions Jesus asks his inquisitive caller. Ponder anew the familiar words of Jesus in John 3:16. Notice the entire context in which these famous words appear. How does a person with a sinful heart of unbelief come to believe in Jesus Christ? How does that happen?

Pray for Pastor Dana as he preaches. Pray for our entire summer series. Have you shared the BRIDGE illustration with anyone yet? Pray for the Father to open doors for you to share thus summer. And keep practicing! “Father, send a harvest! Amen.”
