Criticism and conflict seem to be de rigueur these days in the public square. Politically, ideologically, socially, and from a faith perspective as well. It feels like everybody’s out to criticise everybody else.

And it’s not just in the public domain that this goes on, although let’s face it, social media’s made that a lot easier these days. It’s at the interpersonal level too. We’ve all somehow found our voice and man, there are so many critics out there.

Just by way of a reality check, how much negative criticism have you partaken in, in just the past 24 hours? It may not have been to someone’s face, but have you found yourself in private criticising some of the people you work with, perhaps a family member, or the politicians who run your country? It can be a bit scary when you do a stocktake like that.

So as you turn those questions over in your mind, let’s just dive into what God has to say to this critical world of ours:

Ephesians 4:29 When you talk, don’t say anything bad. But say the good things that people need—whatever will help them grow stronger. Then what you say will be a blessing to those who hear you.

Imagine if you and I, amidst all the criticism that’s hurled at people, chose to be different; chose to speak kindly; chose to be an encourager rather than a critic; chose to build others up, to bless them with our words.

How different would the world be then?

In a world that already has more than enough critics, you can choose to be an encourager instead.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
