The world’s powerbrokers – national leaders, billionaires, celebrities, social media ‘influencers’ – all have a couple of things in common. For the moment, they carry a lot of sway but one day they’ll be gone.

Have you ever thought about what shapes the way you think? What are the things that create the lens through which you perceive and react both to the social issues of today and all that’s happening in your personal life?

What constitutes wisdom has shifted rather a lot in the last half-century. It’s out with the old morals and in with a new, shall we say, more fluid approach to morality. Societies have become not just less cohesive but more sharply divided. And most of this strife is being fuelled by a very vocal, highly influential minority.

Into all that, along comes Jesus with a wisdom that we know, deep down, works – but one that for many is difficult to accept. Here, once more, is the Apostle Paul writing to the Corinthians two thousand years ago:

1 Corinthians 2:7,8 But we speak God’s secret wisdom that has been hidden from everyone until now. God planned this wisdom for our glory. He planned it before the world began. None of the rulers of this world understood this wisdom. If they had understood it, they would not have killed our great and glorious Lord on a cross.

So offensive was God’s wisdom back in the day that they nailed Jesus to a cross for espousing it. Powerbrokers and their followers have always rejected it (there’s nothing new in that) and likely always will. After all, if they’d understood it, they wouldn’t have nailed Him to a cross.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
