Costume designer Ruth E. Carter sat down with HFPA journalist Margaret Gardiner to discuss her work on the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Black Panther series: Wakanda Forever, for which she won her second Academy Award for Costume Design, making her the first black woman to win multiple Academy Awards in any category. They also talk about her long career, having her finger on the pulse of a city like in Spike Lee's seminal classic Do the Right Thing, interpreting the past with limited visual information for films like Steven Spielberg's Amistad (which also earned her an Academy Award nomination), how she made the leap from acting to costume design, the significance of her middle initial, and more.
