His role as a recce soldier saw him operate in Iraq as Brigade Surveillance Company team leader & Forward Air Controller in the Brigade Reconnaissance Force in Afghanistan. James later qualified in 2014 as an Army helicopter pilot, but was medically discharged in 2019 with post traumatic stress.
