How to Sharpen Your Social Skills Ken Eash Do you consider yourself a social person? I think on some level, we all are. Or more correctly, we all need to be once in awhile. Even the most introverted and independent of us, has certain social commitments they have to deal with at times. If you find that you struggle in these situations, you can certainly use these nine powerful tips to help sharpen your social skills. 1 Start Small One of the best ways to sharpen your social sills is by starting small in your day-to-day life. Small talk is a great way to sharpen your social skills, and it doesn't take much extra effort. The next time a neighbor says good morning, be willing to engage in a short chat. 2 Ask Open-Ended Questions Open-ended questions are a great way to enhance your social interactions. Instead of asking questions that end with a quick "yes" or "no", ask questions that require more thoughtful answers. This will help keep people engaged and you won't feel like you have to carry the conversation on your own. 3 Seek Like-Minded People If you struggle in social situations, why not try to make things easier for yourself? Try to find like-minded people that share similar interests as you. You will naturally feel more at ease when you are talking about the things you already love. 4 Develop Your Active Listening Skills Social skills are just as much about listening as they are about speaking. You should ensure that you are a good active listener. Active listening means making eye contact, using other non-verbal cues and otherwise seeming interested in the person speaking to you. 5 Become a Better Storyteller Being able to tell a great story is one of the best ways to sharpen your social skills. No matter how awkward or anxious you might feel, if you can tell a story that gets everyone on the edge of their seat or busting a gut you will be remembered. A great way to practice storytelling is actually by writing them. 6 Learn to Read Body Language You don't have to be a master of body language yourself, but you should learn the basics. When you know what to look out for, you will know how people are responding to you. You will know when to stop talking, as well as when to continue. You will know if people are engaged, or annoyed. 7 Plan a Few Good Conversation Starters If you struggle in social situations, make sure you have a couple good conversation starters or stories in your back pocket. To begin with, this will make you more confident in your social interaction. It will also ensure you have something to say when the conversation dwindles. 8 Shut Down The Distractions This is going to be hard to hear for some people, but you should probably turn your phone off. It's impossible to have meaningful social interactions if you are constantly checking your phone. If you can't bring yourself to turn your phone off, at least keep it in your pocket. 9 You Get What You Give Like most things in life, when it comes to social interactions, you get back what you put in. If you want people to be interested in you, then show interest in them. If you want people to be kind, then show them kindness first. Social interactions are most pleasant when they are reciprocal. ACTIONABLE STEPS 1 Start With Small Talk. Social skills are like any other skill, they take practice. Try making more small talk with the acquaintances already in your life. This will let you practice your social skills, while enriching your current relationships. 2 What Are Your Interests? What are some things that really get you passionate or excited? Maybe you should focus your social interactions on people that share these values. 3 Think of a Few Conversation Starters. Think of a couple of exciting or funny stories that you can use when conversation starts to stagnate. Try to match the stories to your potential audience. Today we're talking about my #1 Key to a life of IMPACT: Mindset Specifically, Growth VS Fixed Mindset We'll talk about: Why Mindset is Important What is a fixed mindset What is a growth mindset Growth VS fixed mindset Why mindset? What’s the number one factor that determines whether or not someone succeeds at achieving a goal? Do you know? Is it genetics? Luck? What about skills or natural talent? Hard work has to be in there somewhere, right? How about networking and getting the right degree? All of these factors are important, some more so than others, but none hold the number one spot. So, what’s number one? If you guessed mindset, you’re right. Research has shown that mindset is a better predictor of future success than every other factor you can consider, including working hard and natural talent. Fixed mindset There are two basic types of mindset: fixed mindset and growth mindset. Of the two, growth mindset is the preferred one, but that’s not to say there is anything inherently wrong with having somewhat of a fixed mindset; it’s just a different way of viewing the world. Furthermore, few people have a pure fixed mindset or a pure growth mindset. Most people have a combination of the two, and they might have different aspects of each in different parts of their lives. A person’s mindset is also changeable and changes naturally through time or due to conscious effort. Growth mindset A growth mindset is one that believes in change and improvement. Someone who has a growth mindset believes that their skills and talents can be improved through hard work, practice, and dedication. Natural talent is a gift of genetics, but it alone is not enough to make someone a master of their craft, and even the most talented person can get better through practice. People with a growth mindset have a love of learning and never stop trying to learn new things, even many years after they get out of school. They’re always trying to understand the latest methods in their field, improving their skills at a sport, or learning something new. Growth VS Fixed mindset Growth mindset and fixed mindset might seem like opposites, and in many ways they are, but there’s more to it than that. These mindsets are different ways of looking at the world and of processing and using the information that we are presented with. From a personal development standpoint, a growth mindset is preferred, but that doesn’t mean it’s better than a fixed mindset in other ways. Both have their advantages and disadvantages and having more of a fixed mindset or more of a growth mindset doesn’t determine what type of person someone is. 15 Insights To Overcome Your Fears, Doubts And Apprehensions Of Working On Yourself 1 Live With Purpose If there is one way to override doubt, fear, and apprehension it's with purpose. Your doubt might actually be a symptom of your lack of purpose. The why of what you do is important because the why is what provides you with momentum. If you hone in on that this will help you weather any rough road you encounter. From here on out, when you feel self-doubt creeping in, check your purpose. Fear, doubt, and apprehension can be crippling. To start overcoming yours, find your purpose, determine your values, and get to know yourself. That's part of the personal development process, but it's also something you can start separately from self-improvement. That process should help you ease some of those doubts and fears you feel about personal development. 2 Your Inner Circle Matters Who do you spend the majority of your time with? The company you keep can heavily influence you, whether that is positive or negative. If you spend your time with Debbie Downers, then there's a good chance you are going to turn into something of a Debbie Downer yourself. If you are constantly surrounded by Positive Pattys, then it stands to reason you will also start being a more positive person. Moods are contagious. Think about it. Have you ever worked somewhere that everyone is on tenterhooks waiting to see what mood the boss is in? If they breeze in with a good morning everyone breathes a sigh of relief and it's a normal day. If they storm in with a face of thunder the mood in the entire building shifts. Your inner circle has that much sway with you and if they are negative, miserable, or unkind, then they are going to stimulate those fears, doubts, and apprehensions you feel about personal development. Moreover, they might want to hold you back because they won't want to be left behind by your growth. What you want in your inner circle is people who lift you up, encourage you, motivate you, pick you up, brush you off, and run alongside you cheering you on when you need it most. Nothing is more important to your journey to overcoming fear, doubt, and apprehension than a strong social network that will support you through anything. It isn't a one-way street, of course, you should be that kind of person to your inner circle as well. Strong, positive relationships are important so nurture them. Those are the people who will be with you always and it's beneficial to both your personal development and your mental health to take care of those relationships. 3 Avoid Making Comparisons You cannot rely on other people to make your decisions, nor can you expect them to steer you in the right direction. The only person who knows which direction is right for you is you. Your personal development journey is your own and only you know what is right for you. With that being said, you cannot grow by making comparisons. It doesn't matter what your next-door neighbor is doing. It doesn't matter what your siblings, best friends, or arch-nemesis is up to either. Their judgment of you does not matter, their accomplishments do not matter, and if you think they do you will always feel inadequate. That inadequacy will immerse you in fear, doubt, and apprehension, and with those weighing you down, how will you grow? Success is not a carbon copy of someone else's success. It's different for everyone and you are the person to define what success means to you. You have a wide variety of talents, skills, and abilities, and to walk the right path you need to develop those. Comparison is the thief of joy and that's not what you want for your life. You are unique and you are capable of facing your fears. Remember, personal development doesn't look the same for everyone and if you constantly compare yourself, you are likely to slip into self-hate and resentment. That's going to hold you back even more. Use yourself as the marker for your growth. 4 Practice Self-Care How can you beat fear, doubt, and apprehension about personal development when you lack confidence, feel low, and unloved? Self-care is imperative to human success. You have to look after yourself daily to ensure you are at your best. There's no room for doubt, fear, or apprehension when you love yourself. A lot of people slip into anger and self-hate in response to their self-doubt. They're just mad at themselves for whatever . Beating yourself up to move forward will only push you further backward. That won't help you. Instead, you should aim for kind, constructive motivational self-talk that overrides all of the negative self-talk that is dragging you down. Self-care looks different for everyone, but the basics are the same for all of us. You have to eat well, get enough sleep, and hydrate. Those are the big three, from there you can build your self-care regimen to fit your personality and lifestyle. If you feel self-criticism coming on, flip the switch and turn it into self-compassion. 5 Be Consistent Okay, right now you don't have a plan in place and you might not have a strong idea about the logistics of making things happen. However, you have to start immediately by taking a single step forward towards something that you have fear, doubt, or apprehension about. It can be anything, though it would be helpful if it was directly related to your desire for personal growth. Having said that, taking a step towards something that terrifies you is an act of personal growth in and of itself. There's a voice in the back of your mind and it is telling you to go out and do something, so if you keep stalling and ignoring that voice… it will get quieter and quieter until you drown it out altogether with negativity. One of the reasons we hold back is a fear of vulnerability. The idea that we expose our wants and wishes and risk failure… it's paralyzing! There is only one cure for that and that's to get started! So, set yourself three small goals and think about what you want to achieve, why you want to achieve them, and what you will need to make it happen. Having strategies and being consistent will make life much easier. Goals give you direction and if you keep experiencing fear or self-doubt, then your plan might not be fit for purpose. Even if we don't actively pursue personal development, we still evolve constantly as humans. You are not the same person you were five years ago and you won't be the same person five years from now that you are now. Don't you want to have some control over how you evolve? That's what personal development is. 6 Face Your Fear It's hard to face your fear when you feel crippled by the risk of failure. It's important to remember that no one is perfect, nothing is perfect, and perfection is unattainable. Once you believe that you will feel freer than you have in years. Failure is inevitable, but that doesn't mean it is game over! When you fail, you fall, and then you pick yourself up and you go again. Every failure comes with a lesson (or more than one), so you have to think about failure as a learning opportunity rather than the end of the world. Face it, no failure is the end of the world even if it feels like it at the time. As soon as you realize the power is within you and it has been all along you can start taking responsibility. It comes down to mindset and if you believe you are worthy then you will do what it takes. If there is something that you have been avoiding because of doubt, fear, or apprehension, now is the time to act. Disrupt your negative thought patterns and take the plunge. Before you do, ask yourself what's the worst that could happen because it's never as bad as it seems. Start by making a list of why you don't think you can do it and write another list about why you believe you can. Write it out so you can use it as motivation and ideally, the list of why you can should be longer than the other. Often, doubt makes us rationalize things to fit our emotions. You might be scared to fail, you might be afraid to take on more responsibility or to look bad, but you are capable. 7 Challenge Your Inner Critic Your inner critic plays a major role in doubt and fear. You see a job listing and you think it sounds like the perfect match for your skills. As soon as you submit your resume you start to question whether you're capable of filling the role. By the time you get a call for an interview, you are filled with doubt and apprehension. You don't think you have what it takes. You have what it takes and you need to correct your inner critic and let it know it's wrong. The longer you allow yourself to stay stuck in an emotion (or a situation) the harder it becomes to escape it. So, to overcome your inner critic, start by celebrating past success. You deserve credit for everything you have achieved thus far. You have been through some hard times and even though you can't picture it when it's happening, you always come out on top! When the inevitable uncertainty comes your way, you need to reflect on your successes and push the negatives aside. As tempting and as easy as it is to focus on the negatives, you have to shift your focus on to what's going right and use that to propel you forward. If your mind is constantly telling you that you can't do a particular thing, then your behavior will believe it and that's why you need to challenge your inner critic. You have to learn to recognize when your subconscious thoughts are veering in the wrong direction. It will take time, but it's a great way to monitor your state of mind. Don't let your inner critic hijack your personal development journey. 8 Failure Beats Regret When you feel a twinge of fear at the prospect of failure, there is one certain way to stop it right in its tracks and that is to remember that regrets are far worse than a failure could ever be. I wish that I had… If only I… I should have… forget that . Grab hold of one of those I's and flip it on its head to become an I will . Between the two, one will last far longer than the other and deep down, you know that failure fades while regret lingers. Think about both, the failures you have experienced and the regrets that you hold onto. Which ones hurt more? For me, it doesn't matter how much distance I put between myself and those regrets, they still sting. When I look at my failures it's much easier to shrug them off as something that simply wasn't mean to be. It might have been difficult at the time, it was disappointing, but at least I gave it my best shot. The regrets are the things you never bothered to put yourself out there to try or do or act on. When you reach the end of your life, you won't be thinking about your failures, but you will likely consider those regrets. There won't be a "what if" if you go out and do whatever it is you're so afraid of failing at. Put yourself in the best position to succeed and go for it. 9 The Root What is it that you are so afraid of? Why are you holding onto those doubts or apprehensions? What is it that is holding you back? Where does this fear or doubt regarding failure originate? Find the root cause, acknowledge it, and then overcome your fear. Everyone has a different way to figure it out but find a quiet place to relax and think about when your fear or doubt started. Once you have determined a timeline, you can drill down into why it started. For example, you may have a fear of public speaking and the reason for this stretches back to junior high when you flubbed your lines delivering your oral book report. It wasn't that big a deal, but you were facing an audience of 12-year-olds and they giggled as you slipped up and struggled to get yourself back on track. You walked away with an A, but all you could focus on was the tittering laughs of your classmates. It didn't matter that almost everyone had similar issues when it was their turn. All you could focus on was your experience and how awful it felt to be laughed at. You didn't fail, but you walked away feeling as though you had. It might not have been something like that, it could have been getting caught in an elevator breakdown or almost drowning as a small child. Those types of fears often follow us around and if you don't take steps to expose yourself to your fears, they will follow you forever. Afraid of water? Spend time in the shallow end splashing around. If that's too scary, fill up a kiddie pool and start there. Go get in an elevator, if that's too much at once, then start with a small closet and work up to the bigger step of riding the elevator. Whatever the root, if you examine it now through different eyes, you might realize what little impact it should have had on your life rather than taking over every facet of who you are. You deserve to be the best you possible and you can't become that version of yourself until you invest in personal development. 10 Eyes on the Prize Once you identify the cause of your fear or doubt, you can focus on your goals. Keep your eyes on the prize! When your mind starts whispering you can't do this because… then you have to recalibrate and tackle some smaller tasks that feed your ultimate goal and keep you moving forward. If you want to conquer your fears and doubts, then you have to set your mind solely on the outcome that you would like to create. The more you focus on the prize, the easier it is to eradicate pessimism. Avoiding your fears and indulging your doubts only makes it that much scarier. What it is, by facing it, it will fade. So, make your plans and do what it takes to carry them out. 11 Eyes Forward, Keep Moving Ahead Once you improve your mindset and recognize that you are in control and not the victim that you have painted yourself as, you can focus on moving forward. Your destiny is in your hands and the only way to make it happen is to take action. No one else can do that for you. No one can enroll you in further education and complete the degree you want to pursue. Nobody is going to apply for your dream job and ace the interview for you. No one will carry out your self-reflection and learn what you want from life. It's all up to you. With that in mind, you need to keep your eyes forward (on that prize) and keep moving ahead. 12 It's Never a No And by that, I mean that you should never say never. If you constantly say no or never to yourself, then you steal away any chance of hope you have. You have to be your own best motivator and that makes sense because you're definitely already your own worst detractor. It's time to flip the script! There are two ways you can do that. 13 The Worst-Case What is the worst thing that can happen? Is it a panic attack that triggers a heart attack? Because the likelihood of that happening is… so low I don't think there would be a statistic available to prove how unlikely that is. The more you chase your fears the more they will run at the sight of you. Sometimes you have to let the worst-case scenario play out in your mind just to prove how ridiculous the fear is. 14 The Evidence If the worst-case scenario exercise isn't enough to change your mind, try challenging your fears by looking at the evidence. You're worried about getting trapped in an elevator and suffocating? Is there a single case of this happening? No, because elevators aren't airtight! You are more likely to die at the hands of a bear than you are in an elevator-related accident. If your friend shared a similar fear, how would you advise them? 15 Follow Your Inner Guide Once you're in tune with yourself you have to learn to trust your instinct and follow your inner guide. You have to trust yourself, both to take the plunge and to control the plunge you take. The doubts that whisper in the background have to stay in the background because that isn't your inner guide, it's your inner critic. It's imperative that you can distinguish between the two. You have to trust yourself instead of listening to opposition or arguments waging war against you. If you're wrong? Who cares? Again, what's the worst-case scenario? Wouldn't you rather be wrong than living with regrets? When you feel overcome by fear or doubts, you have to trust your inner guide. You are in possession of the solutions to all of your problems, past, present, and future. That inner guide is far more powerful than any other influence could...…

Five Reasons You Need a Personal Development Plan A personal development plan assists you in finding your purpose and developing your strengths. It also gives you the confidence needed to get out of your comfort zone. A good personal development plan will also help you improve your self-awareness. This combination will ensure that you know your potential and live up to it with intention. 1 Discover Your Purpose On the road to self-discovery, most people want to know why they are here. If you want to know your purpose in life, focus on your personal development and create a written personal development plan to help you find it. As you discover what makes you think the way you do, challenge your thoughts, and decide what facts you’ll use to make sound decisions. When you do this, you may come across additional information that will lead you to closer to your purpose. You are more likely to feel good about the ideas you have and actions you take each day because you know they will have a particular impact. 2 Develop Your Strengths Once you discover your strengths as you study yourself and pay close attention to how you feel about your actions, you’ll know what to develop. Focusing on what you are already good at is always preferable to focus on where you are lacking. Getting additional training, practicing, and learning from others regarding the things you’re already good at doing is a much more pleasurable and successful way to approach your life. You’re naturally good at something that gives you joy and makes you better. So, you may as well use your natural gifts. Get Out of Your Comfort Zone While you do want to focus on what you are already good at doing, sometimes it takes time to see what that is. Getting out of your comfort zone has nothing to do with forcing yourself to focus on things you aren’t good at doing. Instead, it may mean simply showing someone else what you’re good at. Boost Your Confidence As you develop yourself, you’ll start experiencing success, and that experience will boost your confidence exponentially. Part of personal development is focusing on learning to have a positive mindset, taking the best care of yourself, and reveling in your skills and experience. When your confidence is strong, you’ll free yourself from paralyzing self-doubt and negative thoughts and emotions. You can’t help but become strong when you craft and follow a plan based on self-discovery and your goals. Improve Your Self-Awareness Since personal development is all about you, getting to know who you are is especially important. Knowing who you allow you to know and lead with your strengths so that you can cope with your weaknesses realistically and kindly without lying to yourself or others about who you are. Self-awareness is the ultimate precursor to authenticity. You also need a personal development plan because you’re much more likely to succeed at anything when you have a plan. A personal development plan is a documented set of facts and information to help guide and direct you through the actions and habits that make up your life. For example, if you want to succeed at any dream, it starts with a goal. Then, through smart goal setting, your goals become a plan that you can follow, track, and even change throughout your life while remaining focused on your ultimate dreams and goals. When you're the "everything" person, as so many of us are, as solo-preneurs, it can be super difficult to think of only having ONE goal. What works well for me is to think of it as a pyramid, with the ONE BIG GOAL of the impact you want to have, or life you want to live, at the top. That goal needs to rest on a solid foundation, with each level below it slightly larger and expanding outward. There may be layers and levels that don't seem to be DIRECTLY tied into the goal, but as an element of what you want in life it can still be pertinent to what you're building. I know it can be hard to FOCUS on one single aspect or element of the pyramid you're building, and ultimately only you can decide what you want in your life. Just remember, you'll move faster if you focus on one foundational block at a time, rather than building multiple blocks at once. That's not to say you need to drop everything to focus on your food systems, or podcast, etc. But to give the appropriate time to what's necessary, and then to laser focus on the one building block until it's running smoothly, then add the next block. Your whole life, you may have very well been somewhat sheltered, or have gotten used to just rolling with the punches as they came to you. This kind of mindset doesn’t work so well for being successful, and changing the things that you’ve known your whole life can be a scary jump to make. However, everyone goes through it at some point. Being uncomfortable may seem like a bad thing, but there are positive aspects to it. When you’re nervous, it means that you know you’re doing something that you wouldn’t normally do. This is a step forward - you doing something out of character - and knowing this means progress is being made. You’re no longer stuck in that same rut - you’re changing things up. You should know that going into your journey to success, you’ll face a lot of adversity and struggles. There will be times when you’re upset, feeling stuck, feeling uncertain, and all kinds of things. However, those negative feelings are greatly outweighed by the feeling of accomplishment you get when you start to reach your goals. Eventually, you can learn to embrace the nervousness and the worries that come with taking on something unfamiliar. Even if you have to put on a smile at first, you’ll soon find yourself loving being in new situations with tons of opportunities to do something that will help you succeed. You’ll finally be breaking up the monotony of everyday life with new, refreshing experiences. There are many people that claim that nothing worth having comes easily, and the same can be said for your path to success. You’re trying to retake your life and change it all up for the better. This is a daunting task, because you’ve spent so much time in your old, unfulfilling life that you don’t know whether or not you’ll succeed in this new mindset and lifestyle. However, it’s much better to have at least tried. Even if you were to fail to become successful with a new strategy, you’ll be able to sleep easily knowing that you did give it your all. If not, you’ll end up with regrets later in life about not having tried. On the other hand, you might end up successful after all, and you’ll finally be able to live that life you’ve always dreamed of. Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedAriel, along with her husband Clay, their dogs, cats, bees, and poultry, lives in a tiny house on wheels in the mountains of western Wyoming and they are working on setting up their own new little homestead. She's been living this lifestyle since 2014 and her wonderful partner has joined her more recently. They collect and split wood for heat, source water from a gravity feed out of a natural spring, use a composting toilet, have a small solar setup, and attempt to grow, hunt, or forage as much of their own food as possible between the weather and wildlife. Living a little over 6000 feet above sea level tucked into the mountains means it's a somewhat harsh and cold climate with snow on the ground 8+ months a year and potential frost, freezes, and even snow flurries all summer long. Ariel loves to garden, cook, can/freeze/ferment/dehydrate food, hike and backpack in the mountains, and photograph the tame and wild animals she is surrounded by. Emotions are a thing that people either seem to be ruled by, or don't have any at all. In my search for balance (as someone who is an emotion suppressor) the things in this podcast are what I'm learning and trying. Covered in ep 69, 74, and 81. DISC, Direct, Interactive, Supporting, Critical, personality types. The Direct person will display confidence, like he or she owns the place and knows what’s up. The Interactive person will be engaging with anyone and/or everyone in their vicinity. The Supporting one will be holding a door, or picking up a piece of trash, or looking for ways to help someone else out. The Critical person will be scanning people/place/things to find what’s missing or out of place. They are looking for the details everyone else is missing. Main topic: On Fireside Freedom last night , we talked about stoicism, and how tenets of stoic philosophy can be hugely beneficial to your life. One question in particular sparked a really good discussion: “How do you handle the general societal push that we should all be “happy” all the time and overcome the entitlement mentality of “But I deserve this!” The thing we really got going on was the generational divides, and how it seems like millennials especially, and GenZ to some extent, are extremely susceptible to the “I deserve to be happy” mentality. A quote I came up with a while back really applies here: “You deserve everything you want in life, to the exact degree you’re willing to put in the work to achieve or create it”. No one owes you anything. Not your dad, mom, brother, sister, or even the guy that punched you in the face in 5th grade. You don’t “deserve” a new phone, the latest xbox, the nicest clothes, or even your next meal. Simply existing is not a reason to be handed the things you want in life, or even the things it takes to keep you alive. The Constitution said it best: “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”. Life, you were given at birth. Liberty, is slowly being eroded away, but you still have the liberty to go Do/Be/Have what you want in life. You still have the liberty to create the kind of life you want to live. I you believe you don’t or can’t, then you won’t. It’s as simple as that. The pursuit of happiness is where most people get hung up on. They believe they deserve happiness. And that gives them the expectation they can find it in outside forces (people, places, things, ideas). So rather than pursuing actual happiness, they chase after fickle things. The nice car, the giant house, the shiniest rims, the last gadgets, the most expensive jewelry. But true lasting happiness only comes through the actual pursuit of it. It’s the result of doing the work, and THEN enjoying the result. It’s doing things you love and are good at to IMPACT a life outside of yourself. It’s taking a walk down the street and petting the neighbor's dog, or smelling the flowers, listening to the birds and crickets sing. Back to the generational thing, I brought up the hypothesis that the reason for seeking the emotion of happiness without doing the work to get it, might stem from all the various forms of media consumed (especially) by the 2 most recent generations. Humans are emotional beings. Life is experienced through our emotions. A person who has cut off emotion typically has a dull life experience. Ask me how I know. All good music and movies are built to draw up or create an emotion inside of you. And having grown up with that experience, it’s easy to see how people could begin to believe that those feelings should be constant and on demand, without having to do through an experience to receive that emotion. Take love for instance. We can actually feel love for fictional character in a movie or show based on how they are portrayed, the supporting cast, the music, the lighting, etc. We sit and watch the show, don’t do the work of getting to know the person and GROW to love them based on who they are, but based on the feeling the directors want you to have. Is it any wonder then that outside of music and movies (the real world) youth tend to “fall in love” so easily? Get heartbroken so easily? Love em and leave em so easily? They haven’t learned that love is a choice. Love is work. Love is hard. You won’t always have that FEELING. You instead have to make that CHOICE. Oh sure, it may start with a feeling. That’s the attraction phase. But it has to grow from there. The feeling, the newness, leaves. And that’s only ONE emotion. The happiness thing is on a whole other level. We’ve been so lied to through music, movies, and marketing, that we DESERVE happiness. We think we’re owed happiness. We think others have to give us happiness. When the thing or person or place no longer makes us feel happy, we simply move on to the next thing that makes us happy in the moment. We don’t CHOOSE happiness. We instead sit back and WAIT on happiness to come to us. We seek happiness without the effort to become happy. We seek health without exercising and eating healthy. We seek wealth without providing value. We seek comfort without getting up off the nail. We seek love without being a loving person. We seek connection without vulnerability. We seek knowledge without learning. We seek , we seek, we seek…..but we’re not willing to do the work first. We think, “if I only had (insert whatever thing, feeling, emotion here) THEN I’d do the work. If they paid me more I’d work harder (provide more value, first) If he/she was (hotter, funnier, more serious, less critical, better with money, etc) I’d show more love (be loving first) If they do this then I’ll do that (do the thing, FIRST) BECOME the type of person who those things will come to FIRST, the results will come. Remember the line from the movie ‘Field of Dreams’, “if you build it, he will come”? The work comes before the enjoyment of the result of the work. What would happen if you quit using media as a crutch for our children? How would things change if we quit putting a screen in front of them instead of giving them what they actually need….some quality time? What if music, movies, and advertisements weren’t the biggest influence in the minds of our youth? We’ve given them life. Now let’s teach them how to LIVE! We try to keep them healthy. Let’s show them where health comes from (it’s in the food we eat) We’ve shown them the emotions of happiness (and all the other emotions) through music and movies. Why not teach and show them where true happiness comes from? We all get anxious from time to time. It's natural. However, sometimes anxious thoughts take over, leaving us paralyzed with doubt and worry. Using these nine tips can help you quiet your anxious mind. 1. Stop and Pay Attention to Your Body When you feel those familiar feelings arise within you, stop and listen to your body. Where does the stress show up? Where do you feel the tension? Do you feel ill in your stomach or chest? Make a conscious effort to breathe slowly. 2. Challenge Your Anxious Thoughts It is common to have angry, anxious, or irrational thoughts. Most of these thoughts often center on what you perceive as worst-case scenarios. Counter these thoughts with questions such as 'how likely is this to happen?' or 'is this a rational thought?' 3. Breathe Notice how your breath grows shallow when you are anxious. The shallow breaths trigger the fight-or-flight mechanism in your brain. It's a good idea to practice breathing techniques regularly, so you will be in the habit when you really need them. 4. Decide on One Action You Can Do Right Now Taking action is the best way to combat anxious thoughts that paralyze you. What specific action can you take toward solving the issue that worries you? Now do it. 5. Tidy Up Your Home or Desk Clutter causes anxiety to increase in us all. Why not combat it one pile at a time? For example, while waiting for your coffee to brew, sort through a stack of papers on your desk. Spending 5-10 a day results in 35-50 minutes a week— and a cleaner house or desk. 6. Schedule Time to Think about What Makes You Anxious Let yourself have 15 minutes each week to let your mind unleash its worry. If anxious thoughts arise outside of this time, tell yourself you will listen to those thoughts at the scheduled time. This gives you back control. 7. Make Relaxing a Priority Anxious minds need rest and relaxation. Make relaxation a priority. Read a good book. Take a nap. Meditate. Binge-watch your favorite sitcom series. Take a hike. Do what makes you feel relaxed. Your body's central nervous system will enjoy the reboot and better prepare you for future anxious times. 8. Get the Right Amount of Sleep Giving your body the right amount of sleep cannot be understated. Sleep deprivation will cause you to focus on negative thoughts. It will affect your physical and mental health. Determine the best amount of sleep for your body and do everything possible to get it. Make your bedroom a haven. 9. Break Out the Crayons and Coloring Books It sounds childish, but coloring can work wonders to relax your mind and change your focus. Wake Up with a Purpose for the Day Start the day before you leave bed by focusing on the good things you are about to achieve. An excellent practice to implement is to think that you “get” to go to work, not “have” to. The simple change can be monumental for your attitude. 2. Make Your Bed When you make your bed first thing in the morning, you set the course for the rest of your day. This task takes about three minutes, but it signals that you can keep the momentum up and accomplish much more. You'll also be much happier when it is finally time to go to bed, and it is tidy and ready for you. 3. Declutter Your Home A little declutter can be very cathartic and put a smile on your face when you are done. Stacks of books, papers, and even dirty dishes send messages to your gloomy psyche and raise stress levels. Taking 15 minutes to declutter your table, kitchen counter, or desk will bring a quick smile. 4. Display Sentimental Items Some items bring back fond memories of family and friends. Why not put them on display to remind yourself of some good times? It can be the cheesy bobblehead from a trip to see the world’s most giant ball of yarn, but every time you see it, you remember your laughs during that trip. 5. Take a Walk in Nature Mother Nature has much to offer, including bringing you a ray of happiness. Grab your walking shoes and get outside when you feel the blues coming. Your mind and body will enjoy the fresh air from the outdoors. 6. Make Exercise a Daily Activity We were made for movement. When you exercise, you give your muscles and brain what they need to keep you healthy. The hormones you release during exercise will lower stress and help make you happier. 7. Get More Sleep Poor sleep can lead to a poor attitude. Why not take a chance on science and make your sleep a priority. You may need to go to bed earlier, but your body and mind will reward you the next day. You will feel more calm and capable of carrying out your daily tasks. 8. Stop Comparing Yourself to Others People often show only their best selves on social media. Looking at those false impressions will leave you feeling discontented. Taking a technology fast is one way to keep from comparing yourself to others. Instead, you can focus on building relationships that bring lasting happiness. 9. Have a Weekly Family (Or Friends) Dinner Engaging with your family (or friends) keeps the relationships strong. Having a weekly dinner provides the opportunity for laughter and good times. You don’t have to make it elaborate, just welcoming.
