Dr. Michael Smith is an attending physician of internal medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. In 2014, Mike began taking Level 1 improv classes. Realizing early on that the skills learned through improv could help him as a hospitalist, Mike began implementing them at work. The result was more enjoyable work, better interactions with patients, and more effective teaching.
In 2018, Mike started doing healthcare improvisation workshops and created Healthcare Improv, which is an Omaha, Nebraska-based startup specializing in improv training as a communications tool for healthcare professionals. (SO COOL!)
In this episode, we talk all about how healthcare improv can help medical professionals practice and learn empathy, listening skills, growth mindset, wellness/self-care, trust, and much more! It's so cool (just going to keep saying how cool it is) that these exercises that are usually considered just for the theater/arts are now being used to help medical and healthcare professions.
We also go on a little side tangent and talk about Mardi Gras. Deal with it. 😃
