Ian is Head of Athletic Development at Port Adelaide FC, as a senior member of the performance team and the strength and conditioning delivery to the playing group where he deals daily with the interaction of performance enhancement, injury prevention, return to competition and long-term athletic development. Alongside working in one of the most competitive and physically demanding sports in the world Ian enjoys furthering his work in athletic development through collaboration with many research groups and consulting in a wide range of sports; most notably tennis and football. He is an Accredited Strength and Conditioning Specialist (ASCC) through the UK Strength and Conditioning Association and a Professional Coach as part of the Pro-Structure within the Australian Strength and Conditioning Association. He completed his PhD thesis in 2013 at the Australian Institute of Sport titled “Power development and movement ability in junior athletes”. Whilst completing his thesis Ian worked with the Matilda’s football team as National Coordinator of Physical Performance, he also spent 3 years coaching at the ACT Academy of Sport leading the strength and conditioning programs for hockey and women’s football. Prior to moving to Australia Ian worked as a strength and conditioning coach at the Sports Institute of Northern Ireland for many years, again leading the preparation of a multitude of sports at national and international competition.
