Jimmy, John and Sam Never Seen a Wookiee Bellydance? This Can Be Remedied. Chicago, Ill. (July 7, 2016): Raks Geek, the group that achieved viral internet fame for a video featuring a Wookiee bellydancing to a Klingon band singing an original song in Shyriiwook (the Wookiee language) returns with a brand-new theatrical production July 22-23 at the Uptown Underground. Though based in Chicago, the bellydance, fire, and flow arts company has made waves nationally and internationally on MSN, The Daily Mail, and UK Channel 4 TV through their commitment to blend a high degree of artistic and technical mastery with creativity and themes from geek culture. Raks Geek will perform a Friday night show geared toward adults and a special Saturday afternoon matinee for families. Both performances will pay homage to Star Trek in celebration of the forthcoming film, as well as showcase original tributes to Star Wars, Doctor Who, Super Mario Bros, and more. "One of the things that Raks Geek does best is present dance at a high technical skill level, but in a setting that's fun," says founder and director Dawn Xiana Moon. "It's incredibly audience-friendly, so it appeals to the general public and to people who love dance. But it's also a show by geeks for geeks. So anyone that enjoys comics, science fiction, or video games will find something extra to love." The bellydancers and firespinners of Raks Geek have performed everywhere from Spain to Argentina and dance for hundreds of people every week. The current company is comprised of Michi Trota, an organizer of the Chicago Full Moon Fire Jams and editor of the Hugo-nominated Uncanny Magazine; Kamrah, who has taught and performed at Tribal Fest (the largest tribal bellydance festival in the world); Lee Na-Moo, winner of the 2010 Chicago Oriental Dance Competition and a member of modern/contemporary company Joel Hall Dancers; Gaea Lady, who last month won "Best Debut" and "Most Classic" at the Burlesque Hall of Fame; and director Dawn Xiana Moon, who performs over 100 shows a year with Read My Hips tribal bellydance and Acrobatica Infiniti Circus in the US and Canada.
