Weight Loss Series

Goal Setting and Weight Loss

Having a goal, specifically an ideal weight, is a critical part of a weight loss program. A time frame is useful also, but often people give up because they don't give themselves enough time to accomplish a goal. Success is just a matter of hanging in there while working towards a goal. Am I willing to be patient if my weight loss goal takes more time than I expect?

Today take the time to review your weight loss accomplishments--how far have you come and also how far you have to go? Is your goal reasonable and does the prospect of reaching or staying at your goal still motivate you? Is your goal realistic or do you need a new one?

A goal should follow the acronym “SMART” - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time Bound.

Specific—that would mean an exact weight

Measurable—You can measure whether you have succeeded or not. In this case it could be a scale, but also a tape measure for inches lost

Achievable—is it possible for you to achieve your goal weight? Goals must provide a stretch that inspires people to aim higher. Goals must be achievable, or they’re a set-up for failure. Set goals you know you, can realistically reach. Don’t try to lose 50lbs in 4 weeks. Don’t try to lose more weight than you should either.

Relevant—Is it relevant to your life to lose weight? For most people, achieving an optimal weight is a great thing when it comes to health, but do you have other priorities that demand your attention such as very young children, health issues, or a super busy work schedule. Weight loss might not be relevant to the season of life you are in right now.

Time bound—is there an end date in sight? An end date is good, but realize that maintaining your goal weight is a lifelong proposition.

David Kirchoff, former CEO of Weight watchers wrote in his book Weight Loss Boss "...It took me 9 years to finally reach my goal weight. Adopting a healthy lifestyle is not a straight path. It is a winding path with steep ups and downs. The biggest mistake you can make is to give up on yourself after a big fall. Further, you should expect that you will periodically fall— I did it so often."

Clearly define your ultimate weight loss goal and any mini-goals along the way. If you are at your goal weight, describe an ideal day that will lead to weight maintenance.

Affirmation: I am steadily working towards my weight loss goal and I will do all it takes to succeed.
