Austin was age 25 when his dad found him deceased in the family's basement. According to the post-death toxicology and autopsy reports, he did not have pre-existing conditions nor any illicit or prescription drugs in his system.

"Though kratom related deaths are low when compared to its widespread use, the denial that kratom use does not result in fatalities is false and misleading. Mitragynine has been confirmed as the sole toxicological finding in overdose deaths and has played a role in other adverse effects, including hepatic injury, seizures, and coma."

Papsun, Donna & Schroeder, William & Brower, Justin & Logan, Barry. (2023). Forensic Implications of Kratom: Kratom Toxicity, Correlation with Mitragynine Concentrations, and Polypharmacy. Current Addiction Reports. 10. 1-10. 10.1007/s40429-023-00477-4.

"A few forensic cases of opioid-like deaths with lung congestion and high postmortem mitragynine blood concentrations with no obvious alternative causes of death have now been reported. There is also an anecdotal report of naloxone being successfully used to reverse kratom intoxication."

McCurdy, C. R., Sharma, A., Smith, K. E., Veltri, C. A., Weiss, S. T., White, C. M., & Grundmann, O. (2024). An update on the clinical pharmacology of kratom: uses, abuse potential, and future considerations. Expert Review of Clinical Pharmacology, 17(2), 131–142.
