My guest is Suzanne Rose and she is a Sergeant of the Queensland Police Service, having joined in 1998. She was poached by a spotter in recent years, and landed the perfect role for her personality, running professional development workshops for police training facilitators. This includes her favourite signature three-day facilitation skills workshop - 'Facilitate with Flair'. Watch our conversation on YouTube . Her role has led her to study the craft of facilitation beyond her organisation, and to learn what is best practice based on research from around the world, including studies from the fields of neuroscience and educational psychology. We talk more about her Facilitate with Flair experience and how she navigates the mindset of "doing things differently" when working in an organisation which is hierarchical, and where things are done a certain way. Suzanne is committed to transforming aspects of police organisational culture around training. She hopes to reduce the mortality rate with the cause of death being PowerPoint, and actively inspires facilitators to be brave enough to try more engaging and fun ways to deliver their sessions - even the heavy, dry and serious policing topics. Suzanne is a full-time working mum who lives in Brisbane on acreage in koala habitat, with her husband and their two young daughters, a Labrador, pet chicken, and an abundance of wallabies, possums, rainbow lorikeets and kookaburras around their property. She spends any spare time making fun memories with her girls, and can't wait to take them on adventures through far-away lands abroad where nothing is taken for granted. Good leaders are made; they are not born. What does it take to be one? Watch our conversation on YouTube! Leadership is a very critical role in any organization, and oftentimes the success or failure of one depends largely on the kind of leadership that it has. This is why it is essential that leaders in the modern marketplace be equipped with good and effective coaching skills to develop people and lead more effectively. The popular rhetoric related to coaching tries to teach leaders to be executive coaches; in contrast to that, our guest today believes that coaching is an essential skill that you can bring in handy at any given time. Clifford Morgan promotes enhanced leadership by teaching leaders essential coaching skills that will help them develop their people every single day and therefore become more effective as leaders. He is an organizational psychologist and leadership expert who served for more than fifteen years in the Royal Australian Air Force. As a coach, Clifford has worked with CEOs, Military Officers, Government Executives, and business and community leaders across a wide variety of industries. Earlier his month, he published his newest book “ The Coaching Leader ”. I met Clifford in Brisbane, but I really didn’t have an idea about his backstory until I have read it in his book. But today, he’ll share that story with us as well as some few snippets of what his new book, “ The Coaching Leader ”, contains. A lot of community and business leaders out there really has huge potentials. If they could have the right training to acquire the proper coaching skill set that they need, they could unlock their full potential and become even more effective in their organizations. Tune in as Clifford dives into the details today. In this conversation, you’ll hear Clifford discuss: His experience in Iraq and how it shaped his perspective on work and life His new book, “ The Coaching Leader ” The importance of having and creating fun at work Having clarity in your message Click here for show notes and to subscribe to Leanne Hughes' Work and Live Large podcast. When you think about paid subscriptions, it's really a question around what does your future hold? Today on the show it's not really a question I'm exploring, but I'm sharing something behind the scenes of what paid subscriptions I'm m stopping, continuing or starting, as a result of a recent subscription audit I ran on myself. With the SaaS (Software as a Service) f business model, we get sucked into paying a monthly fee. And then I don't know about you, but sometimes then I look at my bank account or read my email and the subscription is ticked over again and I think, am I actually using this? I think December is a great time of the year to re-evaluate what you're paying for and make a decision on whether you keep it, or it goes. So I think as a good exercise, it's definitely worth going through that. Enjoy the listen! - Leanne I'd love to see you in California in Feb 2023! How do we become the effective leader that this world truly needs? What traits do we have to embody in order to pave the way toward positive change? Putting ourselves on the receiving end of our own actions helps us rethink the way we’re doing things. We got to be able to take a risk, and not be afraid of it. As our guest today says, if you believe you can do the job, knock your socks off and go for it! Today’s guest is all-round legend Tim Guinea. He is a family man and the Founder and Managing Director of Autonomy & Asset Management Group. With more than 15 years’ experience across the mining and resources industry, he is an experienced professional with specialist knowledge across all areas of Asset Management. Tim has worked for, and with, world class mining houses and service providers including Anglo American, Fortescue, Downer EDI and Thiess, starting his career as a Drill Fitter in exploration, to leading teams of professionals to deliver world class outcomes safely, efficiently and on-time across multiple states. He is known for his leadership style and operational expertise, which has seen him improve culture and ultimately the business' performance. Outside of business, Tim loves to spend quality time with his family and has 3 children, soon to be 4 early next year. He loves all things outdoors, especially sport, and since retiring from Rugby League has found a passion in Triathlons. I met Tim when I was still working at my old company, Thiess; however, I didn’t know about his upbringing on a farm, especially on how that dramatically impacted his work ethic and attitude. So tune in and grab your pen, folks, for in this episode, it’ll all make sense. In this conversation, you’ll hear Tim discuss: Skills shortage in Australia and what Tim and his company are thinking about in terms of doing differently when it comes to attracting people How Tim’s farming upbringing helped nurture his resilience as an apprentice, a tradie, supervisor, and now a business owner What it felt like becoming a 28-year-old first-time supervisor and leading a crew that were mostly older than him (some double his age) Why tradies make great leaders (transferable skills of communicating, seeing the bigger picture, common sense, and pragmatism) His breathing technique I'd love to see you in California in Feb 2023! When is it okay for us to call it quits and stop pushing through? How can we embody the real essence of professionalism as we set the boundaries we need as we live? Watch our conversation on YouTube! Have you ever sacrificed your precious “me time” to do work for your clients and/or attend a meeting for a job you don’t really love? More often than not, we tend to say yes to literally everything as we dive into the depths of doing business. Just because we fear what might happen if we refuse, we even sometimes end up losing ourselves. But as people say, there’s always a time for us to push through and for us to fail fast. It’s of utmost importance that we work on being self-aware so we can work and live large, especially around the things that are really important to us. After all, being a professional isn’t limited to being dressed like a professional. You can still reach great heights, wearing just a simple shirt and pants, as long as you’re in alignment with what you truly want in life. Mel Kettle is an internationally recognized thought leader on fully connected leaderships and communication. Her clients include leaders, teams, and organizations that want to achieve real connection and sustained engagement. She is the host of the “This Connected Life” podcast and the author of two books, “The Social Association” published in 2018, and “Fully Connected: Focusing on how great leaders prioritize themselves, reclaim their energy, and find joy”. Mel is a good friend of mine; I was at her book launch recently in Brisbane, and it was such a great and beautiful night, hearing her talk about boundaries and other related things. I am certain that this episode will be a value-rich experiment between the thoughts we have in mind, so make sure to sit back and relax as we learn more from the ever-so-receptive Mel. In this conversation, you’ll hear Mel discuss: What it takes to leap into an experiment to back yourself and your decisions How that relates to the self-awareness that you have The story behind her decision to move to the Sunshine Coast and leave the city of Brisbane during COVID, and why she’s so happy that she did it Things about boundaries, especially when it triggers work-life balance concerns The theme around professionalism in work context and how that plays out Conversation moments: (00:00:03) Episode snippet + intro (00:00:58) Introducing and welcoming today’s guest, Mel Kettle (00:03:09) The story behind Mel’s guesting act for today’s podcast (00:04:40) Should I push through or should I fail fast and move on? It is just so amazing, having read a book that’s written in such a beautiful and easy way, that it has made me want to end my day early so I can spend time in bed, reading it page by page. Recently, I’ve purchased Irvin D. Yalom’s book “ Becoming Myself: A Psychiatrist’s Memoir ” after hearing about it from a friend. It’s such a book rich in value where he shared his reflections on life and development. As I read, these then led me to think as well, reflecting on the origin of my own self and the meaning of the life I’ve been living. Not only is this of great help to us as human beings, but also, there’s a lot to learn if you’re working in a group setting. From existentialism to isolation, meaninglessness, mortality, and freedom, Irvin has got it all covered, resulting in this masterpiece. So I hope you join me today, even though this episode is completely new and unique. Because here is where I’ll speak to share how this book helped me see life from a better perspective, mirroring my work and live large statement. In this conversation, you’ll hear me discuss: Who Irvin D. More often than not, as we get sort of blinded by flashy opportunities and shiny objects, we fail to allow ourselves to have that time and space to rethink our career steps. Watch our conversation on YouTube! My guest today, John McKendry and I met through a gig we worked on together a couple of years ago, coaching pharmaceutical leaders back in 2020. He has these spaces in his career where he took some time to evaluate what he wanted to do next – and that is the exact reason why I brought him onto the show. Join me as we learn to work and live large with John today! John McKendry is a senior healthcare executive with over 20 years of experience in the biopharmaceutical, medtech, and healthtech industries. He is passionate about business transformation and lifescience leadership, all while practicing as a healthtech advisor. How do we open that conversation around the benefits of working part-time in a world where hustle culture remains king in most lands? Watch our conversation on YouTube! The biggest assumption people have when it comes to part-time work in senior roles is that they cannot do it, and even if they can, they just shouldn’t. Overwork is being glorified and people think everyone should literally work hard, as if the whole place would fall apart if someone starts working part-time. But today’s guest has seen it firsthand, how highly damaging it is to people’s well-being, productivity, and results when only the business’ profit is the one being prioritized. So in this episode, we hope you join us as we dive into the benefits of a work that’s both flexible and fulfilling, giving you autonomy and freedom while taking action on your purpose in life. Belinda Morgan is the author of the book, “ Solving the Part-time Puzzle: How to Decrease Your Hours, Increase Your Impact, and Thrive in Your Part-time Role ”. She is a leadership and flexible work coach for professionals who know there is more to work and life but aren’t sure how to get the balance right. It has always been important to Belinda to do interesting and meaningful work, and to do it with a degree of freedom. Her current goal is to help other leaders find their perfect combination of freedom and fulfillment, as she’s already seen and experienced it first hand how big of a positive difference it is when you find work that is both flexible and fulfilling. In this conversation, you’ll hear Belinda discuss: How to ask or pitch the idea of working part-time The benefit for business if you are working part-time, especially the societal benefit of having more freedom in life Why Belinda and I love autonomy and freedom as part of our day How she had her concept of a book and got it out to market very quickly Conversation moments: (00:00:03) Episode snippet + intro (00:00:54) Introducing today’s guest, Belinda Morgan (00:03:30) The journey it took her to be where she is today (00:07:07) “Why not? What is the purpose of your organization? Why does it exist? Watch our conversation on YouTube! I'm not sure about you but sometimes I will say that I want and need change, but more often than not, what ends up happening is we run away from it, afraid of the risks it might bring to our life and/or business. Hey, that's normal! We're wired towards survival. But as our guest today says, past success isn’t really a great predictor of future success but a great predictor of future failure . That's why we need to value innovation. Stephen Shapiro cultivates innovation by showing leaders and their teams how to approach, tackle, and solve their business challenges. The first innovation opportunity Stephen spotted was the opportunity to innovate within his own life. He left Accenture after publishing his first book, “ 24/7 Innovation ”, to become a full-time innovation speaker and advisor to clients around the world. Stephen continues to work with transforming businesses to improve innovation practices through customized keynotes, speeches, advisory engagements, and other services. He has a degree from Cornell University in Industrial Engineering and is based out of Orlando, Florida. Back in 2020, the mid-pandemic, Stephen really helped me figure out what to do next with my business. I heard him chat with Jenny Blake on the Pivot Podcast and he talked about innovation as staying relevant. I think with all the constant changes in our world, it’s so important to consider how you can and your business remain relevant, and that is through the process of innovation. Tune in as Stephen dives into the details today. In this conversation, you’ll hear Stephen discuss: What is it that makes your business distinct, what is it that you offer, and how is that durable so that it will stand the test of time and others can’t copy it His sixth book, “ Invisible Solutions ” What we actually really think about creativity in terms of our subconscious How far do you consult when it comes to innovation and getting solutions Focusing on great questions instead of rushing to solutions I'd love to see you in California in Feb 2023! What does it mean to truly have the character of a leader? Is culture really something we can influence in an organization? Watch our conversation on YouTube! We all have that experience wherein we’ve been on the receiving end of connecting with someone who didn’t really value the conversation that we’re having. That’s the most devaluing feeling, just as our guest today says. So join us in this episode as he shares what he’s learned upon writing a book about culture, on why being present is important for a remarkable leader, and how he lives his life as a charismatic introvert. Okay, before we even kick off: Most of the time, ghosting isn’t about you. Stop taking it personally. I know I have absent-mindedly ghosted other people and it's 100% something I'm working on right now, which is why I've produced today's episode. You also can't control what others do, so in this Two by Tuesday, I break down what you can do to influence and reduce the risk of ghosting happening to you. On the Y axis, we're looking at value (expect v offer) On the X axis, we're looking at your relationship status (known v unknown) Watch me break this episode down on YouTube. Earlier this week, I jumped in the car and visited a studio in Brisbane to record a YouTube livestream, for my friend Gerald Pauschmann's YouTube Channel, Waffles & Whiskey . Gerald has been live-streaming for 158 days! I've taken excerpts of the conversation and popped them on the podcast, as we cover topics on leaving your job, starting a business, validation, dreaming up your vision, and so much more. It's just cool being part of a live-stream experience and seeing how Gerald embraces his community. Enjoy the listen! I'd love to see you in California in Feb 2023! Join us today as we learn how to cultivate serendipity so we can live life while creating impact and value day by day. Watch our conversation on YouTube! Whether we admit it or not, most of us fear the unexpected. It scares us, for we have no idea on what’s about to come. It makes us feel disorganized as if we’re straying away from our plan. But things that come out of nowhere can also be an inflection point to something great, to something interesting. See every situation as a growth opportunity and you’ll experience serendipity as you live. Today, we’re joined by Dr. Christian Busch, the author of the book “ The Serendipity Mindset: The Art and Science of Creating Good Luck ”. He’s the Director of Global Economy Program at New York University’s Center for Global Affairs where he teaches on purpose-driven leadership, impact, entrepreneurship, innovation, and emerging markets. He is a visiting fellow at the London School of Economics, and the Co-Founder of Leaders on Purpose, an organization convening high-impact leaders, as well as the Sandbox Network, a global community of young innovators active in over 20 countries. Previously, Dr. Christian served on the faculty of the LSE Department of Management and as the Inaugural Deputy Director of the LSE Innovation Center. He’s been featured on many TEDx Talks. I recently watched one of the TEDx Talks he was in, and it was so fantastic; I’ve decided to invite him here. Join me as we learn from what Christian has to share today. In this conversation, you’ll hear Dr. Christian discuss: What it actually means to cultivate a serendipity mindset The difference between blind luck and smart luck The fear of missing out The contrast between planning and being open to opportunities The dynamics between being an introvert and an extrovert How introverts can cultivate more serendipity in their life Rapid Round I'd love to see you in California in Feb 2023! There's so much content available, but what are we actually doing with it? Today's episode is created for you, but it's also an important reminder for me. I'm addicted to listening, reading and learning new things, it's like an endless search for a silver bullet. How though, do we absorbing information and all of this cool stuff that’s online take action on it? and actually taking action on it. How do we draw that line between I'm consuming all this information, but what am I actually doing with it? We are bombarded every single day by webinars to join, new books to read, new podcast episodes to listen to, new conference to attend. It’s inspiring! It can also get dangerous when we confuse consuming with creating - that’s when consumption can stall your progress. That's what I'm exploring today, using the power of a two-by-two matrix. Right now, where are you on this matrix: A Thought Breeder, a Thought Bleeder, a Thought Leader, or a Thought Reader? Let me know! I'd love to see you in California in Feb 2023! Two weeks ago, I posted a mini rant on LinkedIn. A ton of people commented and also messaged me privately afterwards, with their experiences with employee engagement surveys. I’ve expanded on the thoughts here in this article and also share some alternatives on what you can do, instead. I'm curious, what's your experience been with these type of surveys? Let me know in the comments. Here's what I heard publicly: “These employee engagement surveys always seem such tick box exercises, it's hard to get passionate about them. I also dislike the fact that they have to be anonymous. They should offer anonymity as an option but sometimes it's also nice to receive direct feedback based on my responses (both positive and constructive) and definitely to see actions based on my responses. What's the point in me making honest comments otherwise?” Jack Wilkinson “The feedback survey one is particularly galling and falls under "we should do these things to try and keep the staff happy, but we can't change anything, maybe we should have a pizza party, that makes staff happy right?”- Derek Van Tonder “Seen it all” - Mike Oskam I’ve expanded on the thoughts here in this podcast episode and also share some alternatives on what you can do, instead. So many experts and thought leaders tell me that I must "add value" in my relationships. What does this actually mean? Watch the YouTube walkthrough here. I think there's an incorrect assumption that "adding value" means sharing content, wisdom and advice. On last week’s episode of Two by Tuesday, we talked about the 2x2 matrix of competence and joy with regards to our work. The top left of that box – the trap quadrant – says a lot about us, being highly competent in something, but that something doesn’t give us the joy that we need in life. So today, I invited someone who can help us out if we’re stuck in doing a lot of work in that trap area. Join us today as we learn to live with more fulfillment, joy, and ease while still being ambitious. Watch our conversation on YouTube! What are your ambitions in life? More often than not, when we reach our 40s, we start to go through this transition wherein our ambitions change. Some find it hard to navigate this, given that the culture of our workplace doesn’t change as we are, but to cut the dissatisfaction, we need to embrace the change that’s happening within. But the question is how? How do we allow ourselves to fully step into life and work in the way that we want while also sustaining ourselves in the long run? Discover the answer to that question as we dive into this episode with Kathy. Kathy Oneto is an executive and leadership coach, a career strategist, and a strategy and marketing professional. She hosts the podcast called Sustainable Ambition. Also, she is the founder and chief strategist at The Agency Oneto. Kathy’s mission is to help leaders and professionals get in touch with their personal aspirations and ambitions to find their own success and find more ease, so that they can make an impact and realize their full potential. Her strength is working with ambitious individuals who want both fulfilling professional and personal lives and help them be great leaders In this conversation, you’ll hear Kathy and I discuss: How we achieve sustainable ambition How we focus on the things that matter most to us and do it in a way where we feel like the work that we’re doing is actually something that matters Her insights on the adult development and growth journey as we get older How to navigate our shifting priorities in life as well as work How she takes action on an idea What to pay attention to if you’re trying to navigate a transition How to plan for periods in our lives that last for around 12-18 months I'd love to see you in California in Feb 2023! Something I've deliberately tried to improve over the last couple of years is improving my ability to connect quotes, stories and examples in the moment. It started when I was hosting my first podcast, and wanted to connect my guest's responses with something they had said earlier, or with something relating to their career, or to push the conversation in a new direction. It's a handy skill when you facilitate workshops as well - having that ability to connect participants' responses to the content, or with what someone else said earlier that day. In this week's Two by Tuesday, I share four ways I've improved at this skill but believe me, I can do better! How do you recall information in the moment? All of us here have our own dreams that we want to pursue, but due to the fear that’s holding us back, most of the time, we don’t really put an effort into moving. That’s why in today’s episode, I’ve invited someone who’s gone from being a nobody to becoming bigger and better. Join me as I interview the ‘shirtless’ flag bearer. Watch our conversation on YouTube! How do you live and succeed in a life that is centered on doing things that you truly love? Most people start their goals so high that they immediately fall into darkness when things don’t turn out fine. There are people who are too afraid to take action because of the limiting belief they have inside. Some people tend to give up when things get ‘too’ hard. But remember, each day is a reset, and every day, you’re given the blessing to try again. Your conviction is your armor. Wear it and fight your demons. Pita Taufatofua is a Tongan athlete in taekwondo and cross-country skiing. He has represented these sports three times across summer and winter Olympics. He is the founder of TongaStrong, and has a passion in helping provide opportunities for the youth of the Pacific. He is also a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for the Pacific, and is a Team Samsung Galaxy athlete who lives in Brisbane Australia. Pita and I met back in high school. I love how he is a person who is just so funny and intelligent, but is also so giving and down-to-earth at the same time. It’s just amazing to see the level of growth and influence that he has had just since we’re leaving high school. In this conversation, you’ll hear Pita discuss: What happened on that night of his first Rio Olympics that changed his life in an exponential way His approach to working out and creating discipline His ability to be fearless The process he goes by as he puts effort to achieve his goals A skill everyone needs to master The idea of failing happy in relation to his kayaking experience I'd love to see you in California in Feb 2023!
