As if grief isn't difficult enough, insensitive, ignorant, and unnecessary comments are, sadly, a common occurrence for so many of us. These kinds of remarks will likely come our way at some point as we're grieving.
Things like…

  • You should be doing [fill in the blank].
  • You need to let it go.
  • People speaking on behalf of our loved one who has died, like putting words in their mouth about what they would be thinking, feeling, or saying.
  • Why are you dwelling on it?
  • You should get over it by now.
  • You should be moved on… why aren’t you moved on?
  • Do you think it’s healthy to think or talk about it this much?

And SO many more!
So, I wanted to cover this topic because there are so many complexities to it. And the thing is, comments like this can really hurt, right?! They can even set us back in our grieving and healing journey.
I want us to have a very open, honest, and raw conversation about it. And, of course, equip you with some tools and guidance on how to cope with this—and how to manage these comments—if this comes up as you’re trying to navigate your grief, life after loss, and everything in between.
