Lighthouse of Hope, is a weekly half hour show dedicated to helping anyone with a mental illness or their family, friends, employers, teachers and many other people. Mental illness affects about 1 in 5 New Zealanders. With the right help and support the overwhelming majority of people who experience a mental illness can improve significantly, find ways to manage it and find a positive way through. The show combines the latest research, personal stories and practical advice to help anyone who is struggling with a mental illness. Our guests include, celebrities, experts, people who have personal experience with mental illness, family members affected by mental illness, service providers and many more. Michael Hempseed is the managing director of the Employee Solution Service and also works as a youth worker helping young people in difficult situations. Michael gained an honors degree in psychology from the University of Canterbury in 2008. He has delivered over 50 workshops on mental health in the last two years, to doctors, teachers, parents, social workers, countless school groups and many more. He has taught classes at the university and at CPIT. Michael’s academic areas of interest include suicide prevention, self-harm, preventing sexual abuse and positive psychology. In his free time Michael enjoys traveling, and generally making the most of life, his travels have taken him to the US, UK, China, the Sahara, India, Brazil, Cambodia, The Chernobyl Nuclear reactor, and his adventurous nature has led him to skydive, paraglide and even fly a plane! Lighthouse of Hope - every Tuesday at 11am and repeated Sunday at 2:30pm Do you need help? There are over 4000 social services throughout New Zealand! If you are in a rural area there are many phone numbers or people who offer help through the phone or via skype. There will be someone, somewhere who can help, but it may take some time! If you need help, there is a lot of help out there. Lifeline- 0800 543 354 Lifeline is a free telephone counselling service. It’s free to call from anywhere in NZ and they are 24/7.
