When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. Bullying has been around since forever, but with the increased access to social media it has only become worse. Our youth is subjected to not only in school bullying, but now the bullies can get them where it hurts, online. This is the story of Adriana and Mallory, only 14 and 12 years old when they decided to end their lives. These young girls gained national attention and shook many of us to our core. What you will hear is heartbreaking, but it is so important to note that this could have been prevented. The negligence displayed by adults who are in power to protect children, failed, absolutely failed these children.

Social Anxiety is not just the typical quiet and shy individual who feels ‘out of place’. You could be the ‘life of the party’ and experience spurts of high anxiety. You could be in a conversation but half of you is ready to cry. You could be smiling but inside you feel exhausted because you are beyond overstimulated. I have always struggled with being around people I do not know. I am scared to be misunderstood, not liked, and frankly - I am scared of humans. Maybe that is from trauma or maybe it is because I just do not trust people openly. It takes time. Which is fine. I thought being a homebody and preferring my alone time.. more.. was a negative thing. But I ENJOY IT. I love being home. I love recharging my batteries in peace. I love cleaning my home. I love watching a good movie. I love being curled up with a story - getting lost in someone else’s life when mine feels like a lot. Do I still love to be around people? Yes. But in my own way. I am so used to just pouring my soul that I lost sight of my own private moments to myself. Sometimes we have to hold things sacredly, against our chests, and just be. I have spent this time getting to the root causes as to why I keep making the same decisions, mistakes... realizing that I have a part in my growth and in my downfall. I hope whoever is listening to this that you eventually get to a place of healing, a space in which you can forgive yourself. You are not a victim of circumstances - you ARE a survivor of everything.
