Hosts Laura and Stephen delve into the unique Polish animated film 'The Peasants' in their podcast 'Midday Movies.' The innovative film, directed by filmmaking couple Hugh and DK Welchman, is composed of 40,000 oil paintings and based on the 1924 Nobel Prize-winning novel by Wladyslaw Stanislaw Reymont. The film uses six paintings per second to create a visually stunning narrative about Jagna (played by Kamila Urzedowska), a young woman defying societal norms in her traditional 19th-century village. Despite lighthearted beginnings, the story turns dark, reflecting societal versus natural values. The film, Poland's official entry to the 96th Academy Awards, is now streaming on Netflix, portraying a beautiful yet poignant tale with unique visual artistry. In this episode of ‘Midday Movies,’ hosts Laura and Stephen discuss Studio Ghibli's emotionally potent film ‘Grave of the Fireflies,’ directed by Isao Takahata and based on the acclaimed book of the same name. The film tells the harrowing tale of two children, Seita (voiced by Tsutomu Tatsumi) and Setsuko (Ayano Shiraishi), struggling to survive in Japan during the final days of World War II. Despite being an animated film, ‘Grave of the Fireflies’ is an unflinching portrayal of war's human cost. The hosts explore the film's unique narrative style, the cultural and generational differences in its reception, and the director's personal experiences that influenced the movie's creation. They delve into themes of survival, innocence, and societal expectations, making a compelling case for why this film stands as one of the most affecting war movies ever made. ‘Grave of the Fireflies’ is now streaming on Netflix. Today we’re hosting an episode by our friend and fellow Umbrella Podcast Collective member, Rob Bradley’s “Dark History” Podcast! As the stocky and robustly built man determinedly strode into the Houses of Parliament on June 4th, 1940, an unusual hush fell over the chamber. Front and backbenchers alike waited with bated breath as his piercing blue eyes scanned the room with unyielding intensity. Clad in his iconic dark suit, bow tie, and round spectacles, he took a drag from his famous cigar and uttered the words. "The British Empire and the French Republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength. Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old." The newly appointed Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, a figure of considerable debate today, delivered a stirring address to all members of Parliament following the success of Operation Dynamo. This daring mission had rescued approximately 300,000 soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force and French troops from the beaches of Dunkirk, snatching them from the jaws of Hitler's relentless army. Today we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of Wong Kar-Wai’s masterpiece of doomed romance, “In the Mood for Love” (2000). An instant classic following its premiere at Cannes, “In the Mood for Love” is the story of Mrs. Chan (Maggie Cheung) and Mr. Chow (Tony Leung Chiu-wai), two married Hong Kong residents in the early 1960s whose spouses are having an affair with each other. Today we’re hosting an episode by our friends and fellow Umbrella Podcast Collective members, “History Unhinged: Rainy Day Rabbit Holes.” Enjoy! What do you do when beavers become a problem? If you're Idaho in the 1940s—you toss 'em out of airplanes, obviously. In one of the most bizarre (and oddly effective) wildlife relocation plans in American history, Idaho officials came up with a truly unhinged solution: strap parachutes to live beavers and drop them from the sky into the backcountry. In this hilarious and curious episode, Shea and Jody dig into the Great Beaver Drop of 1948 and the logistics, ethics, and wild ingenuity behind it. From test beavers to confused fish & game departments, this episode will have you laughing and saying "Only in Idaho..." WELCOME TO SEASON 2 of MIDDAY MOVIES Today we’re discussing the Disney live-action remake of the first Disney full-length feature, “Snow White” (2025). Directed by Marc Webb and starring Rachel Zegler alongside Gal Gadot, this modern “Snow White” contains original music, plot updates, and the compelling battle of philosophies between our stalwart princess and the Evil Queen. Expanding the world more than ever before, audiences will discover a war-weary kingdom, a magical forest, and a band of rebels that come together to oppose a callous (if charismatic) regime. Endearing performances, visually striking production design, and new characters combine in a delightful re-envisioning of Walt Disney’s first classic. Let’s get into it! WELCOME TO SEASON 2 of MIDDAY MOVIES Today we’re discussing the 2024 Oscar-nominated biopic, “A Complete Unknown.” In it, Bob Dylan is played by Timothee Chalamet as we chart the early rise of Dylan’s career in 1960s New York. An extraordinary time capsule of Cold War highlights, social justice movements, and the American folk music scene, “A Complete Unknown” captures a 1960s that sharply resembles the 2020s. Audiences will thrill at the political tumult, clashing personalities, and beautiful music that made this part of the last century iconic. Equally, young artists will find remarkably practical insight in how to build a creative career when you are — as they say — “A Complete Unknown.” Let’s get into it! WELCOME TO SEASON 2 of MIDDAY MOVIES Today we’re discussing prestige television series, “The White Lotus” (season 3, 2025). Created, written, and directed by the incomparable Mike White, “White Lotus” is on its third season, with its third collection of luxury vacationers, who have more than a third of life-shattering drama. Taking place in the Thailand White Lotus Hotel (a composite of the Four Seasons and other hotels), we are introduced to a North Carolina family on the brink of legal chaos (Parker Posey, Jason Isaacs, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sarah Catherine Hook, and Sam Nivola), a trio of school friends whose lives are successful but still riven with girlhood insecurities (Michelle Monaghan, Leslie Bibb, Carrie Coon), and a mismatched age-gap couple that puts the fun in dysfunctional (Aimee Lou Wood, Walton Goggins). Also on staff is a literal K-Pop star (Lalisa Manobal from BLACKPINK). Unforgettable characters, monologues, and locales are the cornerstones of all “White Lotus” seasons, but Season 3 puts even prior ones to shame. Let’s get into it! WELCOME TO SEASON 2 of MIDDAY MOVIES Today we’re discussing the new sci-fi satire from famed “Parasite” director Bong Joon Ho, “Mickey 17” (2025). Based on the 2022 book, “Mickey7,” this film imagines a future where human printing and consciousness-uploading technology has created a class of worker known as “expendable” — someone who can die and be brought back to life endlessly. The expendable in our story, Mickey Barnes (played by Robert Pattinson), is a member of a space colonization mission headed by an absurd dictatorial figure (played by Mark Ruffalo) and his wife (Toni Collette), and subjected to a strange cult-like culture and endlessly deadly missions until a day of reckoning. Fascinating in its conception and with a cutting take on both oligarchs and western culture at large, “Mickey 17” is a memorable science fiction world on par with “Idiocracy” (2006). WELCOME TO SEASON 2 of MIDDAY MOVIES Today we’re discussing the new romantic spy thriller, “Black Bag” (2025). Directed by industry legend Steven Soderbergh, written by industry legend David Koepp, and starring industry legends Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender, this story of married high-level British spies set at odds is brilliant, exciting, and visually beautiful. With an extraordinary ensemble cast (Gustaf Skarsgard, Tom Burke, Marisa Abela, and Naomie Harris) that includes an erstwhile James Bond 007, Pierce Brosnan, as well as “Bridgerton” heartthrob Rege-Jean Page, twists and turns and uncertainties abound around six intelligence employees. With precision and clarity, the film explores themes of marriage, loyalty (both national and personal), as well as toxic office politics. It’s enormous fun. Let’s get into it! WELCOME TO SEASON 2 of MIDDAY MOVIES Today we’re discussing the Oscar-winning animated film, “Flow” (2025). Directed by young Latvian filmmaker Gints Zilbalodis, this multinational movie brought together animators from Latvia, Belgium, and France, was completed entirely in the free-to-use 3D modeling software Blender, and shipped only a few days before its premiere at Cannes Film Festival. The story follows an independent cat whose world is threatened by a massive flood, forcing him to find refuge on a boat populated by a capybara, lemur, secretary bird, and dog. Beautifully rendered and edge-of-your-seat thrilling, “Flow” is in fact the most widely distributed Latvian film in history.
