The format is simple. We make the case against and for each of the 5 nominees. Then we rank them in a segment we’ve pompously entitled, Perfecting Perfection. We begin as usual with a lousy song and dance number, but don’t worry because we attempt something those in the business call “banter?” Idk, we give that a try. The Best Actress race poses some tough questions. Does the cast of The Shape of Water steal too many scenes away from Sally Hawkins? Isn’t Frances McDormand the on & offscreen badass we want giving the Best Actress acceptance speech THIS of all years? Has Oscar History already doomed Margot Robbie’s chances? When has Mike No. 1 laughed the hardest this year? It was in Lady Bird? (Wow!!! Must be a good movie.) And of course, the question we’re all asking this award season. Does Meryl Streep’s Darth Vader helmet of a wig disqualify her performance in The Post? Or should Mike No. 1 put a shock collar on his co-host to stop him from pointing out hair & make-up blunders in Hollywood movies? We answer all these questions and more.
