Martin Scorsese? For Best Director? Groundbreaking. After losing the Best Director prize five times, Scorsese finally scored with The Departed, which also took home Best Picture, beating out films such as The Queen and Little Miss Sunshine. Not competing in the Best Picture category was Dreamgirls, which, despite earning eight nominations, didn’t make the cut. Elsewhere, Meryl was earning raves and dominating the box office with The Devil Wears Prada, Eddie Murphy was having a tough go at the campaigning part of awards season, and Abigail Breslin was happy just to be nominated. Join us as we discuss first-time host Ellen DeGeneres, a surprisingly funny bit with Will Ferrell, and Al Gore’s will-he-or-won’t-he coyness about a presidential run. (Spoiler alert: He did not run for president.)
