In this episode, I chat with Hugh Love PhD, a New York based psychologist. Dr. Love and I engage in a wide-ranging conversation about identity and how it is formed and shaped and, in the process, we demystify psychology and therapy and hopefully encourage those who may benefit from therapy to consider it. We also spend some time chatting about masculinity, the stigma around mental health, his childhood in Memphis, Tennessee and being a black man in a profession in which there are tragically few African Americans and people of color, and he shares strategies for coping with the stress and anxiety generated by the complicated and trauma inducing times in which we live.
I am not positioned as an expert so I cannot provide informed referrals. However, Dr. Love mentions Therapy for Black Men as a possible option for black men. The American Psychological Association has a page with lots of helpful information and services. These mental health resources can be accessed here:
