The World Celebrated Bugs In Drag the Day Before 'Bugs Bunny Day' So you know what that Means!

"MARSHA!"

Hello and Welcome to the best Looney Tunes Podcast on the web! This week on the pod, I sit down with Jenny Lorenzo (Jellystone, Victor and Valentina) to discuss the Gender Politics in Classic Cartoons namely, Bugs in Drag!

"In the 1992 movie Wayne's World, Garth Algar asks the question, "Did you ever find Bugs Bunny attractive when he put on a dress and played a girl bunny? His buddy Wayne didn't, but Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam, and the Tasmanian Devil are just a few of the many males who have been bewitched, bothered and bewildered by Bugs' seemingly endless wardrobe of women's clothing." - A passage from the Ultimate Looney Tunes Guide. Looney Tunes In the NEWS: Porky's Hare Hunt (April 30th, 1938) - First Appearance of The Happy Rabbit (prototype for Bugs Bunny) Apparently He’s Never Watched Bugs Bunny! This conversation ties into why Bugs was trending the literal day before 'Bugs Bunny Day' (April 30th), due to the out of touch words of Ron DeSantis who claimed that old cartoons didn't challenge gender norms. Cartoon Shorts Discussed: Hare Trimmed - Dir. Friz Freleng (1953) Story by Warren Foster - "Always a bridesmaid, never a bride." Bedevilled Rabbit - Dir. Bob McKimsom (1957) Story by Tedd Pierce - "She's a nice lady." Rabbit Seasoning - Dir. Chuck Jones (1952) Story by Michael Maltese - "I would just love a duck dinner. "
