017: The Organic Episode | Is Organic Food Better for You?
Manage episode 326937994 series 3005852
The term “organic” has become a buzzword for quite some time now, and a lot of companies label their products as such claiming it’s a healthier option. But is organic food really better for you?
Today, we are going to talk about organic food in the United States since every single country has different requirements for the label “organic.” We dive in specifically to what the USDA-certified organic label means in the United States.
The research I've done revealed to me that the term organic is completely misunderstood in our environment. A lot of people think that being organic means being more expensive. Many think organic means it came from the ground, so why pay more for an organic product than a regular one?
My goal for today is to clarify what the word organic means, and why it is better for you and the environment. As more and more of us buy organic, hopefully, it will encourage more farmers to make the switch because we are voting with our purchases.
In this episode, you will hear:
- The official definition of organic
- The lack of clarity about what certified organic really means
- Organic vs. natural
- More USDA definitions specific to what you’re growing
- The benefits of organic foods and products
- The dangers of pesticides and herbicides
- Why organic is better for the environment
- Why organic products are more expensive
- Ways to make organic cheaper
- How organic certification inspection works
