Put your relationship first with my child? Won’t that threaten my authority? Won’t they walk all over me? When you parent by putting your relationship with your child first, you still have clear limits and expectations BUT you DON’T use your power over your child to shame her or force him to obey….OR ELSE!

When we parent putting the relationship first with our kids, they are much more likely to cooperate with us and it’s easier to find solutions to issues that come up because our kids feel safe coming to us because they know we won’t resort to shaming, blaming, criticizing, etc. We all want our kids to trust us and respect us and come to us and tell us what’s going on with them and this is the way to do it. Listen for easy ways to build a strong relationship with your child and learn how to avoid the pitfalls of relationship killers!

From the Podcast:

Those lectures…. Talk LESS and Listen MORE

Remember, it’s more powerful to listen to your kids ideas, and thought then it is to bulldoze over them with your ‘wisdom’ and ‘experience’. How often has lecturing to your kids created the change you were looking for in the first place? How often to you glaze over when you are lectured to? Give “talk less and listen more” a try the next time you have the urge to lecture your child. Need tips on listening? See below!

Has anyone ever made you feel like you were the only other person in the room because they were so focused on you? So intently listening to you? How did that make you feel? I be it felt amazing! I know it does. You feel special and it feels like love. This is what I want you to give your kids I want to share with you the 5 steps to listening to your kids this is a GAME CHANGER in your relationship with your kids

  1. Listen Intently: What is said in words and non-verbally – put your phone down, no distractions all attention on the person speaking
  2. Listen without judgement: We go through our days with judgement filters – so try to lift those filters so you can really hear the other person. Listen for understanding, not to judge or respond
  3. Listen without interruption: We have lots of thoughts when someone is talking but try to make a conscious effort to listen and keep quiet without interrupting.
  4. Listen without formulating your response: how many times do you have the answer in your mind before the other person is finished talking? What might you have missed? Try to notice if you do this and try to stay in the moment and not have your response laying in wait for the first pause!
  5. 5 - PROTIP- repeat back what you heard!
