We are the most stressed-out generation and we know now that stress is contagious. As parents, our stress affects our kids and leads to anxiety in them. Stress and anxiety are gripping today’s families but there is a way to stop it in its tracks!

When you show up differently for your kids, they show up differently for you. If you are a stressed-out parent and lose control of your emotions and behaviour, you become a factor of unpredictability in your child’s life. We can measure stress responses in children as young as one year old even though they are not conscious of their parents’ stress, their brains mount a stress response.

Learn how stress affects both parents and kids and what you can do to have less stress in your family.

About Robbin McManne

Robbin is a Certified Parent Coach, author and speaker. She works with parents from all over the world to help them build more connection and find more joy and cooperation in their parenting.

Robbin is a former ‘Angry Mom’ and for over 12 years, Robbin juggled a full-time corporate career while being a mom and wife, prior to becoming a Parenting Coach. In her corporate career, Robbin has a background in marketing and public relations, training, and event planning. She understands firsthand how many moms struggle to balance work and family.

It’s because of her struggles as a parent that she found the world of peaceful parenting and has dedicated her life to teaching parents how to build a strong family, so their kids thrive.

Robbin’s work focuses on building and strengthening the parent child relationship so that children grow up with resilience, confidence and strong emotional intelligence. She works with parents to help them understand their own emotions and frustrations in parenting, so they can help build their children’s sense of self without losing themselves in the process!

In October of 2018 Robbin released her first book, “The Yelling Cure – How stress less and get your kids to cooperate without threats & punishments.” Her book is being read by parents all over the world 1000,000 copies sold to date. www.yellingcurebook.com

Robbin divides her time working with her clients, speaking at events and spending time with her two boys and husband. You can usually find her at a hockey rink or sports field cheering on her boys. Most importantly, Robbin has changed the way she parents and connects with her sons and is dedicated to helping parents find the same joy, connection and cooperation in their families.

From the Podcast:

When you or a child you care about needs a stress intervention, follow these recommendations of Dr. Sonia Lupien, the director of the Center for Studies on Human Stress in Montreal and follow the links for more information and tools. – Via www.heartmindonline.org

  1. Know the Signs

The more you are aware of both the physical and emotional signs of stress, the more quickly you can intervene. Stress can manifest in different ways. If any of the following show up, you might want to take a closer look:

  • Problems sleeping (this may indicate worry)
  • Changes in behaviour (for example a calm child who becomes agitated and vice-versa)
  • Very strong emotional outbursts
  • Difficulty with learning and memory (when a child is stressed they have a hard time focusing and distinguishing between what is relevant and not relevant)
  • Hyperactive behaviours (think fight and flight!)
  • Frequent colds and flus (this may be a sign of a low immune system)
  • Changes is hunger, appetite and digestion
  • Muscle tension and headaches

  1. Harness the Power of Others

  1. Problem Solve
    • Name the feelings
    • Identify the trigger in the situation
    • Emphasize ways that the child can increase their feeling of control

  1. Release it
    • Breath
    • Be active - physical movement and play helps to release the extra energy caused by stressful situations
    • Listen to or make music
    • Laugh!

“Name it to Tame it” with Dr. Dan Siegel https://youtu.be/ZcDLzppD4Jc - learn how to squirt those soothing neurotransmitters in the brain in moments of stress!
